I think sometimes judgements are made too quickly on coaches and players. Not only at the pro level, but in college as well.
for example, take Mack Brown as a college football coach. He would never be able to beat a highly ranked team, much less make it to a National Championship, and he damn sure never would be able to win that game. He was tagged with this after coaching at Tulane and coaching football at a basketball college (and actually making that team relevant). Glad that Dodds had the patience to stick with him.
Ever wonder how we would view Jimmy Johnson, had Tom Landry not drafted Michael Irvin, and if Jimmy would have landed his target of Blair Thomas instead of being stuck with Emmitt Smith? And how close was he to benching Troy Aikman in favor of a spare? Things beyond his control fell in his favor (Michael Irvin and Emmitt Smith), and a good decision was made (sticking with Aikman, though he was persuaded heavily by Jerry Jones to stick with him). A dynasty was built around these three players, yet this could have easily been a disaster and a much shorter lived coaching stay for Jimmy Johnson.
Shanahan has two rings thanks to a 7th round running back that they simply drafted for athletic ability, and didn't really expect to make the team. After watching him go completely wild during preseason on special teams, a star was born. Does Shanahan get a ring without Terrell Davis?
