Is Dez Bryant or Demarius Thomas the next Charles Rogers?

Thomas, IMO, can not be considered the next Rogers b/c he is not expected (by anyone but Dearborn ;) ) to be a sure fire stud. Rogers was the #2 pick I think, but top 5 for sure. Neither will be taken close to that high.

I think both will have a better career than Rogers though....but that is not setting the bar too high.

Dez appear to have more hype than actual issues around him. I'm still in a position where I think you are talking apples and oranges if comparing him to Rogers.

I can't believe I'm going to say this but for once I agree with Dearborn, though probably only because I'm a GT fan, I too think Thomas will be a sure fire stud.

Here is what could have happened, had Bryant not started brain farting once Deion Sanders got involved..
Comes off 2008 (87 catches, 1,480 yds, 19 (!) TD's) with a solid 2009, tells the truth about making an honest mistake, keeps a low-profile and nails the pre-draft process, proves that the NCAA infraction was an isolated incident, gets drafted according to his talent to a WR-needy team in the top-10. (Tampa, Cleveland, Oakland, Buffalo) or even has a team trading way up to get him early.

Unfortunately, what happened was.. lied about the incident, loses the entire 2009 season, questions about his background and upbringing arise, has an entire season to prep for the pre-draft showcases yet misses the Combine and OSU's pro day, attends a Pac-Man Jones event, issues an extremely ill-advised and ignorant sounding statement complaining about his perception, and when he FINALLY has a chance to salvage something of his value, he forgets his running shoes during his personal workout day and generally underwhelms.

I won't belabor this "character red flag" point too much again this year, but if someone gets cocky and takes him in the first half of the first round, the story will end as sadly as Charles Rogers. Which is a shame because he posesses more raw talent than Rogers did coming out.
To my knowledge, the only reason Thomas's stock has been in question was due to his injury and lack of participation in any pre-draft events. He shouldn't be looked at in the early 1st round anyway, but I personally like him a tad better than Dez because he'll probably still be in the league in 5 years..

In my 2-round mock which will be posted soon, I have Bryant going to the Patriots at #22. The rationale behind it was they have stable veteran leadership, and they can afford to address a secondary need with him since they have 3x 2nd round picks to work with.
I have Golden Tate to the Jets at 29, then Thomas going to Tampa with the 3rd pick of round 2. I like Tate just a tad better because he's more proven and I feel that I know what I'll be getting from day one, plus they already have the bigger receiver in Braylon Edwards. Tampa gets a tall physical target to develop alongside Freeman, plus a guy who will help the ground game with downfield blocking such as what he was asked to do at Ga Tech.

Bottom line, if you roll the dice on Bryant, don't be sitting around surprised when the arrests, lawsuits, and suspensions start trickling in.

I still believe the Rogers/Bryant comparisons are of the mark by a large margin I will not argue there is some risk. Considering where you have him going, I take it you still have him as the 1st WR off the board?

I do indeed, but my mock drafts aren't a prediction, they're totally a function of what I feel each team SHOULD do based on need vs. value vs. risk (in some cases).

In this event, there were really only like 4 teams that I feel SHOULD even consider looking at Bryant in the first round.. NE just happened to be the first one in line, plus like I said in the post, they have the margin for error due to their other 3 premium picks.

Oh.....does anyone think Bryant is smart enough to just act stupid and drop down to a point where hed be playing for a contender???

yet if he falls that far.....anyone really expect Mike Brown to pass on him?? That would be like tossing out a guy who runs a 4.1 to Al Davis.....

Georgia Tech WR Demaryius Thomas (foot) is scheduled to hold an individual Pro Day on Sunday. He was unable to perform at the Combine or Yellow Jackets' Pro Day due to a broken foot. Rumored to be running sub-4.4 forties before his injury, Thomas' workout could go a long way toward determining whether he'll be drafted in the first round. A time in the mid-4.5s could push him into the second.

Be Fast!
