In retrospect, How did drafting a QB early work out last year?

I was going to try getting a top QB early in a couple of leagues and it didn't work out as they went too fast. Those of you who did go that route please let us know how it went for you. Where you a contender? Would you try it again?

I am stuck here.

I took a QB (P.Manning) early this year in IBL.

Which I think would have been fine, except I then made some other trades like:

Moss for Forte....yeah that was a bone head one....

T.Jones for S. Holmes...another bad deal IMO.

the other stickler was I was able to deal in later to get Favre....which actually could have been my starter all year...and could have grabbed a wr instead of Manning.

Still, taking Manning early was not a bad move.....my other trades were though....sigh...

To me there was some clear seperation in Qbs this year.

You had the elite of Brees, Rodgers

Next tier was Manning, Schaub(depending on scoring..) and Favre, Romo and Brady.

then you had Big Ben, Rivers and Cutler and others right behind.

To me this supports the fact that taking a qb later is a solid plan....as long as you use the pick for the appropriate pts replacent depending on league scoring.

I took Aaron Rodgers in the late 2nd in a heavy bonus (qb friendly) league. Lost in the title game, so guess it worked pretty well.

I have always been a guy who waited until the 6th or 7th round for a QB but have started to rethink that strategy. Still won't go QB in the 1st or early 2nd in standard type scoring leagues, but once the elite RBs and WRs are off the board, I will look QB. Consistent points and not having to play matchups are the benefits for me.

I took Aaron Rodgers with my 3rd round pick. I ended up finishing 6th in the league but 3rd overall in points. I just had some bad luck in all my losses. In the playoffs, I lost in the first round, but had the second most points for week 1 of playoffs. Then in the 2 other playoff weeks outscored the entire league. So just bad luck. My roster was very good though even with taking a QB in the 3rd.

In some other leagues I waited until around the 6th round and finished 1st in 2 leagues, 2nd in 1 league, and 3rd in another. But I had mostly the same rosters due to good preseason planning.

So really, I don't think it matters where you take a QB. As long as you have good preseason planning and a good draft strategy your roster will be good.

Hmmm....

In the Death League, a WR heavy 12 team league, I spent my first 3 on Wayne, Welker, and OchoCinco, which went great.

I took McNabb in the 4th round as the 7th or 8th QB off the board and Carson Palmer in the 7th to back him up. I rotated them based off matchups all year and finished 11-2 before the great Patriots meltdown against the Panthers finished me off in the post season.

I was pleased with waiting.

I took Rivers with my 5th pick then followed him up with Schaub with my 10th pick. I had a championship season.

Starting to lean this way as well. I think a QB in the 3rd or 4th may be something I start to look at if the value is right.

I suppose I also have to agree with this. If for some unbelievable reason you have Qbs like P.Manning, Brady, Brees, Rodgers or even Rivers or Schaub then yeah...4th round I am there as well. 3rd if the top three are there

That's some serious value. 10 or 12 team league?

Schaub was an interesting player in drafts last year. Saw him go all over the place from 4th round to 12th round.

Schaub went in the sixth in SOFFL (Sports Outlaw Fantasy Football League)
RC grabbed him and I had to go Cutler then in the 7th around the corner.

I grabbed him in the 6th in a 12 teamer, which I thought was about right. He went in the 4th in in another 12 teamer I commish, which I thought was early at the time, but guess not. Saw a lot of mocks where he went real late. Big Ben was another guy who went much later than expected in several of my drafts. Since I can't root for any Steeler player, I stayed away on principal which made him slide even more, but he ended up being a great value.

Good topic coach. I just don't see myself playing the waiting game in the future like I used to. I like plugging a guy like Rodgers into the lineup every week, not only as a winning fantasy strategy, but it's also more enjoyable to watch those games when you have a big time QB..........
