Just loved watching him play. I am glad he is gonna get a look at QB.

Cowboys | Rookie QB Stephen McGee impressing - again! Thu Jun 4, 08:24 PM
Tim McMahon from the Dallas Morning News reports he saw more of fourth-round QB Stephen McGee than in the other media-access OTA workouts combined. McGee showed his mobility and arm strength by avoiding the rush and firing a bullet over the middle to TE Scott Chandler. He also hit Witten with a rope on a 15-yard out.
Our view: McGee ran both a pro-style offense and the option while at Texas A&M, and some thought he would have to switch to Safety in the NFL. It was at the Shrine Game where McGee muted all that talk. McGee is very athletic and mobile, but waits until the last possible second before he takes off to run. He keeps his eyes downfield when scrambling so he can throw the ball if necessary. His deep accuracy needs some work and the Cowboys will bring him along slowly as the 3rd QB behind Tony Romo and Jon Kitna. If he develops as planned the Cowboys could have their QB of the future in Stephen McGee.

This seems like a wasted pick for Dallas to me. I really can't see any vision toward a "quarterback of the future" in Dallas, unless for some reason Romo was to lose his starting position in the next year or two, which is very unlikely. Not impossible, but very unlikely.

That said, it would be nice to have a real competent backup at the position for once, if he can mature to that level.

In all likelihood, McGee will get a few snaps this season (provided training camp goes well for him) in the wildhog formation, which I am not looking forward to. There has already been talk about using him in this formation, and bringing him on the field could result in the play being blown up if they actually run it, since teams will be reading into it. Now, if he can actually run a normal play (just using the wildhog formation as a decoy), then there is a chance at some success.

Right now though, just wishing Dallas would have went in another direction with this draft pick.

Slight change there and you are on the right trail.

Kitna does provide solid depth this season in case Romo demonstrates again that he is not the QB to bring this team to the next level. For me McGee, like with most people, was the #5 QB in the draft this year and if he develops will be the reason Romo is moved along somewhere else.

If Romo proves me wrong all bets are off but I do not think he will. If that does happen McGee should be that quality back up solution since Kitna is not likely to make it past this season. Nothing against Romo but it may take a change of scenery for him to return/achieve elite status.

This to me is what is being missed in my earlier discussion for NFC East teams.

Dallas had what I considered two achilles heels.

First was the misuse of the Rbs, and lack of committing to the run. I attribute this to a young OC and an offense forced to be dominated by Owens.

Second, was the Qb situation. No one feared Brad Johnson. In fact...most felt if you could get Romo out of the way...you won. Kitna is not that far removed from huge numbers on very bad team in Detroit. Put him behind Dallas' line...with Witten, Roy Williams and Felix Jones...and :wow: you have to fear knocking out Romo now.

Actually, Brad Johnson seemed like a good fit as the backup, until he got on the field.

As for Kitna, he put up a lot of yards in Detroit on losing teams, and did a decent job as quarterback, but nothing outstanding, by any means. What he did do as a starter was take a ton of punishment behind a horrible offensive line, which has to have aged the guy a little more rapidly than usual.

Now, he has been off the field for basically an entire season, and what he could actually do if called upon is a big unknown.

With TO gone will Romo now step up and be the QB presence people are expecting?

Kitna striking fear into another team is a more exuberant response than I was anticipating but I do think he provides a definite upgrade for them.

Yep, this was the purpose surrounding the drafting of McGee. Felix knows it well, so used sparingly, it could be a success. Not real fond of having my quarterback our running routes though and risking his head being detached from his shoulders.

His value lies solely in what he'll do on the sidelines and locker room. Sure he would be an adequate filler if Romo gets dinged up, but his professionalism and mentorship provide aspects this team's been sorely lacking in recent years.

Ditching T.O., Pac-Man, and Tank will obviously help towards that end as well.
