How to play IDP matchups?

Everyone knows that FF is all about the matchups. I am in 2 IDP leagues for the first time this year so my question to those who have played in these before is how should or should you even worry about matchups when filling out a lineup.

I'm pretty sure the basic rule of "Never sit your studs" will probably apply, but is there such a thing as "Garbage Time Production" for defensive players? Should your start a DB at flex if you think its going to be a blowout or maybe a lesser LB over a stud DB if you think its going to be close?

Any advice here would be great!

Great question....to be honest, I don't much, I usually plug in my top defenders and go. But here are a few things I will look at:

  • DE's: Oline they are facing. Sacks are king with these guys in my leagues and if it's close I may stay away from a stud OT.
  • LB's: I like to face teams that like to run the ball more, more runs, more opps for my LB's to get tackles.
  • DB's: Again, looking for opportunities, more they pass, more opps for my CB to make tackles or get an INT. Mistake prone QB's are a nice target here as well.

I'm a big proponent of using Safeties to the max extent possible at my DB spot, unless it's broken down seperately (CB/S), for the exact reasons you cited, Chris. If it's a blowout in the 4th and the opposition isn't throwing at all, at least a Safety would still be accruing stats for you with tackles.
I also try really hard to fill my LB spots with guys who never leave the field for situational replacements, even if they may be elite in a single category. (Sacks, for instance)
This all takes any weekly guesswork out of the picture when I'm setting that part of my roster so I can devote more time to benching the wrong guys on offense. LOL

I generally keep a short IDP roster so matchups don't get considered much. I'm always checking the waiver wire and the next 3 games is a big issue. If I'm looking for a by week filler matchups become a major issue.

example: a DB in a dome against Favre was always worth a 1 week shot
