Houston TE Owen Daniels Sounds (less?) PUPery (setback?)

Texans coach Gary Kubiak revealed after OTA practice Wednesday that Owen Daniels (ACL surgery) might miss all of training camp. This is the third ACL tear of his football career, so perhaps we shouldn't be surprised. He'll be a red-flag injury risk in 2010 fantasy drafts, possibly losing early-season snaps to James Casey. Rookie Garrett Graham should also get a long look throughout August.

That's too bad. I hope he can fully recover and stay injury free. He was really emerging as a top flight TE before he got hurt.

rotoworld,
Texans re-signed TE Owen Daniels to a one-year, $3.168 million contract.

Daniels has been seeking a long-term deal for a couple of years, but since he's coming off yet another major knee injury, the Texans are wise to make him wait. Daniels may not even be ready to participate in training camp this season. If he can stay healthy and effective for 16 games, the Texans would be wise to take care of the excellent pass-catcher.

I've been interested in this situation for the last month. Daniels was reported to be ahead of schedule on his rehabilitation, but this seems to be taking too long. I would wonder if Daniels is having an issue with the repair.

I know a previous Texan (Seth Payne - NT 2005) had an ACL repaired with a cadaver ligament then had his body reject it. That turned into a mess.

I think perhaps though, the Texans are trying to play it super safe. No point in over-doing it with Daniels when you have Dressen, Casey, Graham (r), Gaines and Hill to take snaps in camp.

But what do I know.... :hmmm:

I hope you're right Texan and the team is simply playing it safe. I've got him for a 16th round pick if I want to keep him and would like to know just where he is on his recovery by the HOF game.

Rotoworld : In a live chat with fans, Owen Daniels (ACL surgery) said that he's "looking forward to being ready for Week 1." Analysis: Updates on Daniels' rehab have been few and far between, so we'll take what we can get. According to Daniels, the doctors say his ACL "looks great." There's still a strong chance that he'll be very limited in training camp, which is causing his ADP to sink like a stone. It's a situation to monitor closely before fantasy drafts.

While this report says his ADP is sinking like a stone that may not be the complete picture. I checked his ADP in 12 man leagues and Daniels is coming off the boards as the 7th TE taken off the boards in the early part of the 7th round. This is a very good value but I don't necessarily think it is all injury related.

More teams have been incorporating TEs in their offense in recent years and as a result there has almost become a glut at the TE position fantasy wise. Just a few years ago grabbing Antonio gates early was a great strategy because he scored so much more than other TEs and the number of TEs that scored well you could count on your hand. Yet now with the surge of production at the TE position you can now wait and still get a good TE.

Back to the ADP for TEs : Currently you have:
Dallas Clark and Antonio Gates going in the 4th Round.
Vernon Davis and Jermichael Finley going in the 5th Round
Jason Witten and Brent Celek going in the 6th round.
Owen Daniels and Tony Gonzales going in the 7 round.
Visanthe Shiancoe late in the 8th round.

So it looks like drafters are getting a little more patient about drafting TEs. So maybe you should also. Having a great TE is a very nice asset and great TEs have saved my bacon in a lot of leagues. But maybe you can wait one more round on a TE if there is another player your gut says is a great value staring you in the face right now in the draft.

Also take into consideration that this comes from Daniels himself. Like Derringer commented on Slaton's recovery this is what you want to say after OTAs are over and it is still weeks before training camp begins.

I watched him on NFL Network lastnight. He was just a little hesitant to say what he was doing at practice right now. Basically he is running some routes, and not taking many snaps. He said the coaches were taking it easy on him, causing Sapp to call him a Prima Donna TE. Daniels said he'd be ready for the first game, but I am going to avoid him this year as my starter, which basically rules him out.

rotoworld,
Coach Gary Kubiak indicated that the Texans are "hoping" to have Owens Daniels (ACL surgery) ready for the season opener.

Daniels isn't participating in training camp, spending time on the stationary bike instead. "I think we're going to have a better idea in a couple of weeks," Kubiak said about Daniels' return date. "His rehab has picked up ... We're all hoping for opening day." Daniels is going to be a high-risk/high-reward fantasy pick this year. He's not among our Top-8 at tight end.

rotoworld,
Coach Gary Kubiak said that Owen Daniels had a setback in his rehab from ACL surgery.

We're not sure about the exact nature of the setback or when it occurred, but this could explain why Daniels' recovery is taking longer than expected. He tore his ACL in Week 8 and doesn't appear close to the field right now. Wes Welker tore his in Week 17 and he's already practicing. You shouldn't be counting on Daniels as your starting fantasy tight end.

rotoworld,
Coach Gary Kubiak indicated that Owen Daniels (knee) is "right on schedule" to be ready for the first regular season game.

"Do I expect to see him (Daniels) in the preseason? It would be the last game if we’re going to see him," said Kubiak. The head coach added that Daniels is "progressing very well" in his rehab. We don't expect to see Daniels at all in exhibition action, but it sounds like Kubiak is counting on him against the Colts on September 12. He's safe to draft as a top-10 tight end, though we'd prefer to let someone else pick Daniels at his current seventh-round ADP.

rotoworld,
Owen Daniels (knee) will undergo an MRI in Houston on Tuesday and visit with Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday.

Reports have been mixed on Daniels. We've heard of a setback in his recovery from ACL surgery, but the Texans continue to insist he's on schedule. A meeting with Dr. Andrews should provide a much clearer update. Daniels, who is on active/PUP, went through "exhausting" drills by himself at practice on Thursday. He says he's hoping to be cleared to start practicing with his teammates next week.

cbssports.com,
The Houston Chronicle reports Thursday that Texans TE Owen Daniels said after Thursday's practice that he will undergo an MRI in Houston on Tuesday and visit with Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., on Wednesday. Daniels is hoping to be cleared to start practicing next week. Daniels, who is on active/PUP, is unable to practice with his teammates. Since Daniels suffered a torn ACL last year the plan has been to try to have him ready for the opening game against Indianapolis.

Analysis: We're hopeful that the MRI and visit to Dr. Andrews goes well and doesn't reveal that Daniels suffered a setback. We still value him as a low-end No. 1 Fantasy TE as long as he's healthy, but he could be limited early in the season. Plan on drafting Daniels with a late-round pick and also take another TE as insurance. We still expect Daniels to make a significant impact this year once he's back on the field

I want to see what Dr Andrews has to say. Then lets see this knee hold up.

This outcome will be important. When you look at Daniels stats over the years he has flirted with studdom but his reputation right now may be better than his stats. His first year didn't produce much yardage but he did have 5 Tds (his max). So it is like this guys got potential. The next two years he got nice yardage but was Td Lite. Last year he missed 1/2 the year but had nice yardage and Tds, 500+ 5 Tds, for 1/2 a year. Brimming with potential but never quite putting together the complete season.

rotoworld,
Owen Daniels emerged from his MRI in Houston on Tuesday saying the test showed his surgically repaired knee is "100 percent."

"Scan and MRI say I'm 100 percent," he confirmed to MyFOX Houston. Daniels will go for a recheck with Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday, but it appears he'll be medically cleared to start the season. Draft him as a top-ten TE1.

His knee has been cut 3 times in the last 5 years I believe. Owen was a big part of my team early last year but if I take him this year I'll have to back him up, something I've never felt the need to do in my $$ league in the past.

rotoworld,
Texans coach Gary Kubiak revealed Sunday that Owen Daniels (knee) will play just 15-20 snaps in a "best case scenario" on Opening Day.

This confirms speculation that Daniels would start the season slowly. He'd usually play 50-plus snaps in a regular season game, but the Texans remain concerned about Daniels' recovery from ACL surgery and subsequent setback. Kubiak didn't rule out the possibility that Daniels could miss Week 1 entirely. Don't plan on starting him in fantasy leagues for the first few games.
