PITTSBURGH -- Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward suffered a concussion in Sunday night's game against the New England Patriots, coach Mike Tomlin confirmed after Pittsburgh's 39-26 loss.
Ward "will go through his normal battery of tests after sustaining a concussion," Tomlin said. "We'll see where we are in terms of next week."
Ward was hurt while being hit by Pat Chung and James Sanders on what was initially ruled a 6-yard catch on Pittsburgh's third possession. Sanders' helmet appeared to strike Ward's helmet.
After Ward stumbled while being helped off the field, the Patriots challenged the completion and it was overturned because Ward did not maintain possession as he struck the ground.
Ward spent the second quarter standing on the sideline, helmet off, before going to the locker room shortly before halftime.
Ward's injury was initially described as a neck injury by the Steelers. The wideout said after the game that he wanted to return, but team doctors would not allow him to re-enter the game.
Ward did not catch a pass, ending his Steelers-record streak of making at least one reception in 186 consecutive games.
Ward was the fourth Steelers player to get a concussion in a week. Will Allen, Mewelde Moore and Isaac Redman were hurt in the Monday night game against Cincinnati. Allen did not play Sunday night.
