Kansas City vs Oakland
1960: The then Dallas Texans beat Oakland in Oakland 34-16. The first recorded meeting of the 2 teams. Oakland won the 2nd matchup 20-19 in Dallas.
Be it AFL or AFC, Kansas City and Oakland have played in the same division since the AFL's inception in 1959.
The rivalry didn't really begin until 1967 when the Kansas City A's baseball franchise moved to Oakland leaving the KC fans without a baseball team until 1969 when the they were awarded an expansion team...The Royals.
Missouri fans took out their frustration with baseball on the AFL Raiders creating, what is today, one of the fiercest rivalries in the NFL.
The meeting this week will mark the 102nd regular season match-up of the 2 teams with Kansas City leading the series 53-46-2.
Both teams have had their share of dominance in the rivalry but standings and records fall to the wayside when these two teams meet. In 1969, the Raiders won both regular season games vs the Chiefs to win the AFL Western Conference title but faced them again in the AFL championship game in Oakland. The underdog Chiefs pulled off a stunning upset 17-7. A Week later, the Chiefs beat the highly favored Minnesota Vikings to win Super Bowl IV.
No matter which team was surfing amongst the elite the other has always been there to deal them a black eye.
I look for this week's game to continue the tradition. Oakland will dot the eye of the high flying Chiefs and bring the AFC West to a showdown.
What's your favorite rivalry and can it compare to the animosity between the Chiefs and the Raiders?
