Freeman calls Leftwich a "smoke screen
"The News
Quarterback Josh Freeman may have put his foot in his mouth on the day he was drafted. The rookie chatted with NFL.com and told them that the Buccaneers acquisition of Byron Leftwich was a ruse. Freeman types, "It was something they told me - they told me it was a smoke screen, everybody would think they didn't want a QB. They said they were ready to trade up.
"Our View
Nice work, kid. We're fairly sure the Bucs didn't tell the same thing to Leftwich when they signed him. Leftwich and Josh Johnson can't be too pleased by this selection, and Freeman probably can't expect Byron to take him under his wing after such comments.

Way to go young fella. How to win friends. LOL

I heard this on Sunday, actually picked the phone up and called Ryan. We talked about how ****ed up it was for the Bucs to tell Leftwitch they wanted him to compete then to tell Freeman that Byron was a smoke screen.

I can't tell you how pissed I am. There aren't words for it.

The St. Petersburg Times reports Bucs first-round pick QB Josh Freeman participated in a NFL.com chat session Saturday and made a startling revelation about recent conversations. The former Kansas State quarterback said he pretty much knew what was coming. "I felt that all along," he wrote. "Even when they picked up QB Byron Leftwich. It was something they told me -- they told me it was a smokescreen, everybody would think they didn't want a QB. They said they were ready to trade up. I think it worked out great. I was sitting there with my family and enjoying it, and I got to go to the team that I wanted to go to." HC Raheem Morris indicated that Freeman misspoke. "We talked about that (Sunday) morning," Morris said. "Sometimes quotes are taken out of context. The young man was asked the question and he kind of answered it the wrong way. "Hey, Leftwich called him this morning and told him he's going to put him in a headlock when he gets down here and then after that he's going to put him under his wing and get him ready to go. So, they talked on the phone this morning and I think we're okay."

The part about Leftwich putting him in a headlock, then under his wing was good!

Thank God. I'm totally cool if Byron can rub that off and keep going. If Byron takes him under and teaches him... I'm feeling a little better about all of this. Not so much about some of Raheem's decisions, but I like the players taking things into their hands.

I don't claim to be anywhere near an expert about the inner workings of the TB franchise, but I would be close to betting my chocolate lab that if morris wasn't their head coach, Freeman would be making ill-advised comments elsewhere right now.
