Fresno State RB Ryan Mathews: Perfect Fit For The Texans?

NFL scouts tell Texans beat writer John McClain that Fresno State RB Ryan Mathews "would be ideal" for Houston's scheme. Bulldogs coach Pat Hill uses a mostly pro-style offense, which should make Mathews' transition that much more smooth. He also appears to have plenty of one-cut ability. The Texans use a zone-blocking scheme and are in the market for running backs. Mathews is a late-first to second-round prospect.

i could see the pick, but only if the texans feel like he's the missing piece . . . that i don't see . . . ;)

it kinda depends on what they get accomplished in free agency . . . if they can score all the og's denver drops by changing blocking schemes (my wish list) and gain some talent in the secondary, they may be only a dt and rb away from going all the way, imo . . . ;)

of course, owen daniels has to return the same player and the #2 wr position needs to be secured as walters is a fa, jones is basically unproven and there's not a whole lot more behind them . . . depth is needed all over too . . . ;)

but, slaton did have neck surgery, so who knows?

When draft season started, Mathews was maybe the #6 RB and I had him pegged squarely as underrated. Now he's climbed all the way into 1st round consideration and rightfully so. With LT and Sproles gone, I don't see how he makes it past SD in the late 1st round. I'm still maintaining that he's the highest rated of the guys who I consider traditional "workhorse" backs. I believe Spiller is super-talented but he's Bush, part 2, and Best has some injury concerns to be looked at. Mathews is as safe as it gets at the RB position in this draft.
As for Houston, I still maintain that as long as Slaton returns healthy, they are just fine at RB with him and Foster, but if they grabbed a RB in the middle rounds it would be a wise move. Everything I've read thus far has them going secondary in the 1st round, and rightfully so.

Fresno State RB Ryan Mathews said he has met with the Houston Texans. Mathews said, "I sat down with their running backs coach and (he) had me go over some plays and pass blocking and what plays I like better and just asked me the simple questions."

yeah, a lot of mocks have fs earl thomas in the 1st for the texans . . . fs is a definite need as eugene wilson is aging and having trouble staying healthy and there's not much behind him although busing surprised a bit towards the end of the season (after pollard was added at ss) . . . and they are letting cb dunta robinson test fa, but he didn't return the same player after his injury anyway . . . they do have some depth at the cb position, but a lot of players were injured last year . . . if i was the gm, i'd try to solidify the cb's thru fa, get one of the solid dt's in the 1st and grab the fs in the 2nd.

but getting back on topic, i'd be surprised if they drafted a rb before the 3rd round which happens to be the same round they got slaton in and do they want/need a back to get outside or a mauler for the short yardage . . . slaton's return from surgery is the key though . . . what little i am hearing says he should be fine, but is that coach speak or not, i really don't know.

i honestly believe much of houston's running game woes are due to the ol play specifically at og.

Fresno State RB Ryan Mathews ran in the mid-4.4 range at the Bulldogs' Wednesday Pro Day. The time is a repeat of Mathews' 4.45 at the Combine, although Wednesday's workout was reportedly on a soggy field. Mathews, emerging as a surefire first-round pick, figures to be considered by Houston at No. 20 overall and New England at No. 22. We don't see him lasting to the Chargers (No. 28).

After the Dunta Robinson defection via free agency, I don't see how this pick won't be Kyle Wilson, unless he's off the board.

I would love to see Houston take Ryan Mathews at 20. I worry about Slaton's health. The kid had neck surgery for a pinched nerve... not something I would want to mess around with too much on a football field.
But I'm not Slaton.

Yes we could use CB Wilson at 20. But not many people read the article that Kubiak said CB Glover Quinn played very well for us. If Cushings hadn't been such a presence on the field, you would have heard the media talking about Quinn. Quotes: Kubiak and players recap 2009 - Houston Texans

It's under the section that starts (on his 2009 draft class)

I could see it going either way. My gut says it will be Mathews. Owner Bob McNair needs to see some flash and production at RB. Outside of Slaton's rookie year, we haven't had anything at that position. But I'll be damned if our OG don't need to be upgraded. I hope that the Wade Smith pickup can help there.
