This is a tough pick. There's no question that they NEED a Qb, but after Newton, I truly believe that the talent falls off a bit. I'm not sold on Gabbert like many are, and while I love Mallet's arm, his attitude is a huge red flag. I love the talent that Von Miller has, and with the crap that Joey Porter put up last year after a huge free agent signing, he would be a nice addition.

It's also pretty hard to pass up on Patrick Peterson here. He's kind of falling on our mock, and he'd be a nice opposite to Rodgers-Cromartie.

With that said, I'm going other here, believing that Ryan Mallet ought to get the selection. I pointed out his attitude, but the guy has a cannon unlike any other QB in this draft. This draft overall is pretty weak compared to recent years, and I cannot pass up a QB for Arizona, even though it seems likely that they may go a different position based on the low talent level in 2011.

I can see Qb here. Not Mallett though. Like him or not, no way he goes top 5. At best he may go late 1st round. I actually think he may be a solid target for cincy to take high in round 2 for their future.

to me this defense need vs. Qb need. In a normal year, i would say go and trade for Kolb, and go with Miller or Peterson here. But this is not a normal year, and you can't get Kolb til there is a CBA. So I am going Gabbert here.

Agreed. I went Gabbert as well. They desperately need a QB. I think Gabbert is that QB of the future. They need a competent QB to be able to throw the ball accurately in order to open up the run.

i agree they need a qb, but i don't see a head coach trying to save his job by drafting a rookie to take the reins without an offensive line to protect him . . . i'm also not sure what they feel about qb skelton at this time . . . i believe they will get somebody in free agency, if not kolb, then maybe bulger . . . if not, they'll also lose larry fitzgerald . . . the value here is at defense . . . and a pass rush is severely needed . . . i think they'll go either miller or quinn here . . . for this mock, i'm going with miller . . . ;)

I went with Peterson. This football team needs to at least be able to cover someone, and he provides electric return potential.

I went Peterson as well.
I'm guessing Fitz would prefer a promising vet QB he has some say in rather than a rookie from a questionable draft class.

From Rotoworld:

The Arizona Republic's Kent Somers predicts that the Cardinals will draft Texas A&M OLB Von Miller if he's available with the No. 5 overall pick.
The team Arizona would have to worry about with Miller is Buffalo at No. 3, although the Bills have been heavily connected to Cam Newton and Blaine Gabbert. The Cardinals could pair Miller with O'Brien Schofield to field one of the most promising young outside linebacker duos in football. Incumbent starters Joey Porter and Clark Haggans are both 34 years old and overpaid.

I wouldn't want one of my starting corners returning kicks or punts. Too much injury risk for someone so valuable to the defense.

Another tidbit from Rotoworld:

Texas A&M OLB Von Miller's forty time at the Combine, officially, was 4.53.
He was unofficially clocked as fast as 4.46. They're exceptional times after Miller gained nearly 10 pounds between January's Senior Bowl and the Combine. Miller, who weighed in at 246 and just under 6-foot-3 earlier in the week, also recorded an impressive 37-inch vertical and explosive 10-foot, 6-inch broad jump. Drawing comparisons to NFL sack leader DeMarcus Ware, Miller is unlikely to get out of the top-five picks this April.

Vernon Gholston Jr.

You are not the only one, from Rotoworld:

Former NFL scout Dave Razzano believes Texas A&M OLB Von Miller has "got some Vernon Gholston in him."
"In looking at Big-12 tape, he does not have a motor," said Razzano. "He doesn't chase hard. They run at him, and he doesn't fight off blockers. When he gets sacks, a lot of times he's not getting blocked. He's a one-move guy." Razzano is on his own here. Miller is widely hailed as the most explosive edge rusher in the draft, and he was the unanimous best player on the field at the Senior Bowl.
