(AP) -- Former NFL star Aaron Hernandez, who was serving a life sentence for a murder conviction and just days ago was acquitted of a double murder, died after hanging himself in his prison cell early Wednesday, Massachusetts prisons officials said.

Aaron Hernandez was convicted of the murder of Odin Lloyd in 2015. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Thanks to a legal principle called "abatement ab initio," however, the state of Massachusetts now considers Hernandez an innocent man.

That's some kind of a screwed up law that makes him innocent. If he is "innocent" while appealing why didn't they let him out of jail? We know why but dam this is stupid.

Saved the tax payers some money. Could have saved a lot more had he done it before his double murder trial.

Could have also left a lot more of his fortune to his daughter rather than in the hands of his schister lawyer.

Lawyer is broken hearted that he won't be making more cash appealing the conviction. He said that Aaron was about broke but that his friends could help pay his bill to get him off. Dirty rotten lawyer.

In another plot twist, since he was never found guilty officially by the state of Massachusetts that means he never technically violated his contract with the New England Patriots which also technically means that since he's dead now his daughter is entitled to the 15 million that was left of his guaranteed money
