Fantasy impact of Cutler trade

Cutler moves to QB of the Bears. Orton and Simms to fight it out for the job in Denver. What is the impact for all affected parties?

Downgrade Cutler? Upgrade Olson and Hester? Upgrade Forte?

Upgrade Orton/Simms? Downgrade Marshall, Royal and Scheffler?

Discuss.

From a fantasy standpoint Cutler does get downgraded some this year due to the Chicago receivers. But this is a nice grab for them. Bears need to get him some receivers now though, Bears WR's will be hot sleeper choices that is for sure.

Orton may be a very nice sleeper. I always thought he was a decent QB and one that was getting better. He now has Marshall and Royal to toss the rock to and McDaniels to mentor him. I do expect them to draft a QB, but don't let Orton slide off your radar next year. This does make me a little nervous on those two WR's though. Orton may do decent, but he's not Cutler in raw skills and it may take some time to get timing down.

The Bears have been in QB trouble for years, Might be a slight downgrade for Cutler but the Bears have upgraded tenfold. Cutler will bring to the Bears a talented QB that carried the Bronco's on his back since they had no running game whatsoever. On a fantasy note Forte will be a driving force in 2009 and Hester will benefit from Cutler's arm. Orton will have another fantasy non-factor season. My overall take is that Denver will continue to flounder, while the Bear's will take the next step to build a quality team.

I feel that the biggest mover, up or down, out of all of this is Greg Olsen. This kid is actually a freaking stud. I think he could easily lead this team in receptions next year. He goes from almost undraftable to boarderline top 5. I really think that he could outperform former top 5 guys like Winslow.

The Bears' acquisition of Jay Cutler could spell good news for Bennett, a teammate of Cutler's at Vanderbilt, in 2009. Bennett starred for the Commodores in his one season with Culter under center, catching 79 passes for 876 yards and nine touchdowns.

Cutler - 3700 yds, 24 TDs, 12 INTs

Good running game and play action opportunities. Not as much of as gunslinger, but a better qb

Hester (assuming the sign a vet wr to play with him) - 55-1050-6 (3 KR TDs)

Keep an eye on who emerges at WR for the Bears. We won't know until the fall. Earl Bennett is the sleeper who may emerge.

Olsen - 55-880-6

Forte, better yds per carry with defences respecting the pass. Possibly the top FF pick for 2009.

1400 rushing, 600 receiving, 16 TDs

Orton

A better qb than most think, but with a limited ceiling. Marshall's suspension will hurt his numbers, but he is a the type of game manager that McDaniel wanted and could be just as good as Cassell passing wise in the right system.

3000 yds, 18 TDs, 12 INTs

Royal - actually here is your sleeper FF pick for 2009. With Marshall out, he will get the opportunities and be the go to guy in a poor offence overall.

65-1100-9

Scheffler - Another nice sleeper. 60-800-6

Great predictions, Walter. Those don't look too bad. We'll see if Forte gets 1400 yards though, I'd probably guess a little less than that on the ground but I can see him getting 2000 total when you add his yards through the air.

Forgot Brandon Lloyd - another possibility if he can stay healthy. Talented, but under produced over the years.

The biggest impact may come from another team. Now that Cutler is off the market I am interested in finding out if there will be an increase in interest for the Browns two headed hydra. Neither would be preferred to Cutler but should be available for a much more reasonable price and with the right team could pan out. What would it take to pry Quinn or Anderson from the team? How much more will it take to get one v the other?

Det: #33 for Anderson be enough?
Den: #48 and Orton/Simms?
NYJ: #52 and ?

You know where I would actually like to see Quinn go? Tennessee.

That would not be a bad move but I would like some investment in the WR corps if that were to happen.

What would Tenn have to give up to get him? I would suspect draft picks would be enough but would a 2nd rounder be enough? Would a team be foolish to invest a 1st as he has been in the league a few years and has not really demonstrated he can be a starter for a full season.

This ordeal was devistating to Cutlers fantasy value.
Not only did he go to a team with no WR's, but he's now preceved to be a head case.
He went from being a top 5 fantasy QB to dropping out of the top 10 ... or worse.

I think he'd be a better fit in Tampa Bay. I think that is a DANGEROUS team if they find a QB. Could put Anderson or Quinn back together with Kellen. Bryant is no slouch either.

Derrick Ward could bring their run game up too.

I think the entire Broncos passing game should be downgraded significantly. This has more to do with not having Cutler back slinging the ball downfield than anything bad about Orton or Simms. Orton/Simms will be decent enough replacements to keep the WR's from dropping completely off the radar, but the numbers overall will definitely be lower than last year. Orton/Simms should be a solid #2 QB and may even creep in as a bottom tier #1 in large leagues. Denver's running game could get a boost, but if McDaniels uses the RBBC that was used in New England, the individual backs will be little more than #3 fantasy RB's. I wouldn't worry about Scheffler. Rumors out of Denver are that McDaniels doesn't think he fits his system and has been looking to trade him as well.
Cutler needs to be downgraded from last season, however, he should still produce good numbers. I agree with above that Olsen should be a big benefactor. Earl Bennett could end up being the best WR because he and Cutler already know each other. The boom or bust guy will be Hester. By boom or bust, I mean he WILL have great games, and he will disappear in some games. He's got the speed, and now has a QB that can hit him in stride. As Hester gets better as a WR, he will improve and could become a superstar, so if you are in a dynasty league, I would go high on Hester. If you are in a re-draft, he should go in the 2nd or 3rd tier of WR's. Forte should put up really good numbers as well. Cutler's arm will make other defense fear the pass and Cutler will hit Hester long just enough times to make the lanes open up for Forte.
