ESPN's early NFL Power Rankings

I'd say the Raiders are the worst team in the NFL and will continue to get worse until the fossil is gone. They are a joke. I would keep the Lion down in the bottom 5. The loss of Gruden does not destroy the Bucs the way this ranking shows them. No way are the Giants the 3rd best team in the league.

I'm not buying the Giants at #3......I like Nicks, but he's not ready to be a true #1, and they don't have one at this point. Defense is great, but offense is going to leave a little to be desired.

I think Pittsburgh and New England seem right at 1/2, in some order. At 3 I'm looking at Philly or San Diego. The Giants should be good, but based on last year's finish and the offseason, I can't see the Eagles not winning that division this year. San Diego will get healthy this year and will probably go unbeaten in the AFC West.

At #5 to #15, there is a large pile of teams that make sense, in virtually any order.

I don't think the loss of Gruden will be as significant either but I do think Tampa will be the worse team this season.

The greatest loss will be Kiffen. That defense was absolutely horrible the second half of the season and they are getting old quickly and have several pieces to replace (namly Derrick Brooks). With Kiffen gone a new staff will have to replace the missing parts and integrate that aging squad with fresher players that have less experience.

Add to that the QB situation. If Leftwich is your best option then you already know that production from that position will not be spectacular. It is yet to be seen what production will come from the RB posiiton also. Can Ward be a workhorse? You can't count on Caddie after consecutive major knee failures he may be only good for spot carries before he blows another wheel.

And if Leftwich is the QB I am sure with his slow release he will see a heavy dose of blitzing. Can Ward or Caddie block well enough to help protect the immobile QB?

On a positive note they do have a darn good kicker!

1 Steelers: Until someone can knock them off the perch they remain #1

2 Chargers: Here is my vote for the team that should knock Pit out of the top spot.

3 Eagles They now have the pieces for the offense to help push this team to the top.

4 Patriots Brady is back – he just isn’t the same QB. Age and distractions will begin to show in this teams play.

5 Ravens If the D doesn’t miss the likes of Scott the O should produce enough to keep them competitive.

6 Cardinals Gotta cut this team a break. For finishing #2 and picking up a new starting RB they should be fine once Boldin resigns.

7 Panthers Looking for another fine season from this blue collar team.

8 Giants Bit of a free fall until the WR and RB situation proves that it can pick up the loss of key players.

9 Colts Peytie knows what to expect as he is already raising issues about the staff changes.

10 Falcons This team should shoot up a little farther as both the Giants and Colts have a rough season.

11 Titans The team is a legitimate threat but will not be overlooked like they were last year.

12 Cowboys Still a strong team but I’m reluctant to claim the O will produce with Roy Williams as the primary target.

13 Packers Packers will rebound in a big way and overtake both Chi and Min

14 Bears Good news has been leaking out of Chi-town since the arrival of Cutler. Will he be enough to turn this team into a serious contender or do they need a true #1 WR first?

15 Vikings Talk about a team that has a huge area of fluctuation when it comes time to ranking them. With Favre they climb to the top of the division and deeper into the playoffs. Without… AD can do just so much for them.

16 Texans The popular pick as a break out team for to long for them to be ranked higher until they prove this is the year. Look for them to climb pretty quickly though once they do.

17 Dolphins They over-achieved last year but last year was not a fluke. The Fin’s take a bit of a dive due to the level of competition and no one is overlooking them this year.

18 Saints The D will rebound… especially if they can get staggered suspensions. The O should remain potent but the RB and WR positions are unclear enough to put them on the bubble – could do real well or cause the whole unit to fall on its face.

19 Redskins This team has not found a way to improve but continually appears to maintain mediocrity.

20 Lions Yes. The Lions are not going to be the cellar dwellers everyone is expecting.

21 Seahawks Look for a little revival with the Sea team as the offense once again produces.

22 Bills With TO already blaming his former teammates one has to wonder if he will survive a full season as an asset instead of a liability. If he does, Buf shoots up the board. If not… they miss the playoffs again.

23 Jaguars The line may help the running game but it remains to be seen if the rest of the team can improve.

24 Jets Lets give this team a season before projecting them to reverse the trend of the later portion of last season. D is promising but the O is a work in progress.

25 Broncos May not see any improvement but should be able to avoid any further collapse.

26 Bengals Even with Palmer back this team does not look to have what it takes to move much farther up the rankings

27 Browns Brady will establish himself as the starter but there is to many questions about the rest of the O to have much confidence at this stage.

28 Chiefs The value of acquiring Cassel will not be gauged by this years win total. Improvements at other areas are needed – maybe next year.

29 Buccaneers Have not become a fan of the new coach yet and until he shows something I have to believe the team is not going to make progress quickly.

30 49ers Nothing about this team really excites me. For a franchise that was great for so long they are starting to resemble the current Raiders.

31 Rams The youth on this team will get valuable experience this year and hopefully it will pay off next season.

32 Raiders If Russell is a legitimate franchise QB they have some nice tools to work with. My vote is he is not and the team struggles for another season.

Ummm if you're predicting the Colts and Giants to have a rough season, then shouldn't Atlanta move ahead of them in the pre-season rankings??

Giants dropping from 3 - 8 and Indy from 5 - 9 not a big enough indicator of a rough season for you? :)

I would imagine Atlanta will finish in front of at least one of those teams but which one? Hence the statement that the Falcons at #10 should shoot up. :stooges:

Are you expecting a final product/ranking in May? :xponder:

Well said. The only other factors to consider is that Graham is also going to be in that run game. Also, the addition of Winslow cannot be overlooked (especially because he now has deeper pockets than any TE in NFL history) as well as franchise tagged Bryant.
