Ed Werder reports on SF QB

I am getting so sick of the local talk radio and the QB "controversy".

Kap gives them a better chance to go all the way, plain and simple. To beat the good teams in the playoffs, they need someone to make plays. Kap can make plays and he actually more poised than Smith. He never looks like the deer in the headlights, so I seriously doubt they go back to Smith.

Plus, as a fan, the game is so much more fun to watch with the kid...................

I agree totally with what you said "E" except the part about them not going back to Smith. That'll happen by hook or crook before the 9ers are done this year.

I don't disagree with ya. But part of me says - you are a garbage QB making mega bucks on a team that has a heck of a chance to be superbowl material. Shut up, hold the clip board and help the guy who CAN make plays to win, not just NOT LOSE.

Not sure what the bonus $$ are, but I would lean against this. Like him or not, he knows the system and can be a care taker. Heck of a great back up option. I don't believe the contract was too bad. But not up to date on that.

If the Kaperick experiment pays off and he is still the starting QB going into next year, no way SF keeps Smith. Ex starting QBs who are still in their physical prime don't make great back ups to young QBs. Look for SF to pick up a vet who is good with the role.

I don't like this whole thing really but I am neither a fan of either QB or the niners but Smith has a 70% completion rate a 104 rating 13 td/ 5 int, an awesome win/loss record and he loses the starting job. Why?. Kap is good, I don't believe you can say he is great only after a few games. I never root for guys to do bad(unless it's Grossman or Shanny) but Smith has earned it and by no means did anything to lose it and I hope Smith gets to be the QB for the niners during the playoffs.
That, of course, is just my opinion

JJ do you remember the sying "Just win Baby"? It ain't good enough anymore. I agree that this wasn't handled right if indeed Smith has lost his job but the kid has a monster arm, fabulous legs, speedy release and has made mostly good decisions. There seems to be little doubt that he's more of the total packafe than Alex can ever be. Sucks to be Alex though cuz as you said all he did was win for what was a sucky team not long ago. He'll be back this season to rescue them but while the kid is in I'll play him on occasion in fantasy.

Anyone remember Danny White?

Same story. Text book QB, impeccable numbers and that "Deer In The Headlights" look....AND, he couldn't win the big games.

I hear ya but Smiths performance in the playoffs (even though only 2 games ) is darn good as well. 101 rating. 5td's/0 int's. So i don't think is was him who couldn't win the big game last season but the 49er's as a whole.

He played one really good game against the Saints and one horrible game against the Giants. Although Kyle Williams was the true goat of the game, if Alex had done anything at all, it would have never come to that. 0-16 on 3rd down. Sorry, but that is on the QB. But, it was a typical Smith game. He just doesn't have it. The most frustrating thing to watch is when he has decent protection and rolls into the pass rush. His OL must hate him. He feels any pressure and he bails and gets rid of the ball out of bounds or takes a a sack.

To win it all, you have to make plays and Smith doesn't do it consistently. Harbaugh is making the right call.

YEP. Good comparison except White was a lot better. Plus he could punt...................

I knew you'd remember him, E.

49er's was one of those big games he could never win.

1982 NFC Championship game. The Catch.

He almost pulled that out after the Clark catch. Hit Drew Peason on a short post and he split the defense. Eric Wright somehow managed to grab the back of his jersey and pull him down. White got sacked and fumbled on the next play. Funny how his legacy would have been so different if Wright doesn't make that miracle tackle.

My first Niner super bowl. Great game, especially since it was the Boys they beat.
