Westbrook will have surgery to clean up bone spurs in his right ankle, ESPN.com reports.

I was pretty high on Westy this year but this does make me.... Hmmmmm.

What is the recuperation time? How intrusive is the surgery?

What surgery has Westie had in the past and how does this one compare?

Report: Westbrook is out until regular season at the earliest

Comcast Sportsnet in Philadelphia reports that Brian Westbrook has a high ankle sprain and will be sidelined until Week 1, at the earliest.

The report adds that Westbrook may need ankle clean-out surgery, which could cost him even more time. Westbrook had problems with the same ankle last year. He also needed arthroscopic knee surgery this winter and turns 30 before Week 1, making him a serious candidate for breakdown. Assuming it hasn't already happened. Westbrook averaged just 2.9 yards per carry in the Eagles' last six games. He's going to be someone to avoid in fantasy drafts. Jun. 3 - 5:43 pm et

This is what I found. I don't know which is more accurate, as mine contains both injuries, and a time frame.

Westbrook to have minor procedure

Agent seems to want to make this much ado about nothing and it very well may be that, nothing. Westy hasn't been an OTA guy or a preseason guy for some time. His durability is something the Eagles monitor because he is such a focal point of the offense. So him taking time off this time of the year could be helpful long term.

It would be different if he was a rookie or learning a new offense.

Philadelphia Eagles running back Brian Westbrook will have surgery to clean up some bone spurs in his right ankle, according to his agent Todd France.

France had no timetable for Westbrook's return but characterized the procedure as minor. Another source, however, said the surgery could sideline Westbrook well into training camp. Eagles veterans report to training camp on July 29.

The All-Pro running back also had surgery on his left knee three months ago.
"We talked about it when he was at the doctor's office and went through the options and decided it was better to clean it up," France told ESPN. "The ankle has been bothering him since last year."

"It has nothing to do with the high ankle sprain," France said. "It's just some bone spurs."

Tis the time of year where every bump and bruise is suddenly news but this is definitely something to monitor as Westie is no spring chicken and things like this could lead to a rapid decline.

Relax, I am sure we will find out a lot more tomorrow. I am not so sure about the high ankle sprain part. I been reading reports about Westy sitting out with a sore ankle and nothing was said about a sprain. A bone spur is just a pointy calcification that forms on a bone and sticks out into nearby tissues. This can make you very sore as it can hurt as you do any movement even just walking around. The nearby tissues are being torn with any movement and it can be quite painful. The fix is pretty simple as the just go in and ground the tiny spurs down. Recovery from this is pretty quick overall but the number of spurs and the size is probably a factor.

Sitting out with a sore ankle seems to fit the bone spur story quite well. A high ankle sprain doesn't seem to fit as well. A high ankle sprain is something you get while twisting it while practicing. Hard to twist up you ankle severly while on the sideline, so this seems a bit unlikely. But if he does have both a high ankle sprain and bone spurs that could be a real setback.

Its the same ankle that he sprained last year....and played with mostly. Still, he is not having a sprain now.

Both the knee and the ankle were clean up procedures...which don't take quite as long to recover from. Still, he probably won't be back until camp...or sometime during camp. I would be shocked though if he was out till the season started.

More practice time for McCoy though!:pickle:

To be honest - I love Brian Westbrook and I think that he's an exceptional talent.

But with RBs in today's NFL I can't even gauge his value objectively right now. If he is healthy and gets plenty of opportunities he could be a steal but I could also see him falling off a cliff at 30.

I'm leaning more towards him being productive, but I'm not sure I'd spend a top 5 pick on him anymore. I want the surest commodity I can get in the first round and right now Westbrook isn't it.

More information needed...
