Now that Tony Dungy has successfully helped Michael Vick land a job, maybe he can play matchmaker for one of his former players.
Future Hall of Fame wide receiver Marvin Harrison remains out of work but is hopeful of catching on with a team. Speaking this morning on the Waddle & Silvy Show on ESPN-AM 1000 in Chicago, Dungy said Harrison can still be a productive player in the league at age 36, even though knee issues have limited him to just 20 games and 80 catches over the past two seasons, the kind of numbers Harrison used to put up in, oh, about 12 games.
In fact, Dungy linked Harrison to a team without a No. 1 wide receiver where the quarterback recently called out the team’s top receiver. Yes, Dungy said Harrison would be a good fit for his good friend Lovie Smith and the Bears.
“Yeah, Marvin can play the game,” Dungy said. “Marvin can get open and catch the ball. Marvin’s whole thing is precision. And he’s the guy that needs work in a system, you know. I think he definitely can play and I would encourage Lovie to sign him if they had that opening.’’
The Bears are not known to be in the market for a wide receiver right now. They have resisted the urge to bring in a veteran because they want to see their young players develop. Earl Bennett, a third-round pick in 2008 who did not have a single catch last season, is slated to start opposite Devin Hester. Rookies Juaquin Iglesias and Johnny Knox have not done a lot in camp, where it has become fairly evident that tight end Greg Olsen will probably be the primary target of Jay Cutler.
