I vaguely recognized the name when the signing was announced so when I read that the Stanton signing made Kolb expendable I had to find out just who this cat was.
For those who can't remember, Stanton played at Michigan State. 2002, redshirt, 2003, back-up to Jeff Smoker, 2004, Academic All-American, 2005, His best statistical year yet 2005 marked the start of his "injury prone" label. 2006, (Senior Year) there was chatter about a Heisman but only had 269 passing attempts due to injury.
2007, Drafted by the Lions in the second round. Placed on IR in the Pre-season.
2008, Sprained his thumb in the pre-season. When Kitna got injured, he moved to #2 on the depth chart behind Orlovsky. He appeared in 3 games.
2009, Lions draft Stafford. Pushed to 3rd string. Appeared in 3 games.
2010, Still 3rd string, appeared in 6 games due to Stafford & Hill injuries. 78.4 QB rating.
2011, Not sure...no mention in his bio. Sat out the season, maybe?
2012, Signs as a free agent with the Jets. 1 week later, Jets pick up Tebow and trade Stanton to the Colts. Colts then draft Andrew Luck and Stanton rides the bench.
2013, Not sure if the Colts cut him, traded him or if his contract was up but Stanton just signed a 3 year, 8.2 Million gig with Az.
WOW. Guy has played in 12 (count them) NFL games and hasn't taken a regular season snap since 2010.
I know they say Arians works wonders with QBs but is he so confident that he can let go of his starter?
On the one hand, this looks like pure stupidity (maybe 1 year for the league minimum) but on the other hand....
Dude has had some tough breaks, getting injured when it was HIS turn to be rookie phenom, and then falling victim to the LATEST rookie phenom....THREE different times.
Could this be another Kurt Warner type story?
