Drafting Rookies In A Keeper League

What are the accepted rules (if any) for drafting rookies in a league where you pay to keep that player next season?

I don't know how many of you play in a league like this, but if you do, please chime in.

The reason I ask is...Ryan Mathews.

Taken in the 2010 1st round of a 5 keeper league (justifiably so), injured, under-achieved, etc, etc.

Now 2011 rolls around and Mathews is poised to put up break out numbers and enter the world of top 10 RBs.

In a dynasty, screw it. You he's yours to start the season.

In a redraft you're ok. You watch the 1st, 2nd and even third slip by before you grab him. Some may find him lingering in the 4th.

In a keeper, Mathews has been tagged as a #1 pick and will cost you accordingly to keep.

Mathews potential is exciting but....are you gonna spend a #1 to keep him?

If you drop him, he will likely be gone 1st round because a keeper draft is missing +/- 60 players before it even starts.

It's almost a curse put on these potentially productive rookies to draft them in the 1st. Until someone cuts him and he is grabbed off waivers, his keeper value will always be #1.

I'd love to have Mathews on my team but I'm not going to surrender 1 of my few chances to fill line-up holes for him.

I wonder if the current owner will.
