Draft review - NFC East

Okay, I want to do a bit of a deep dive, on each team's draft. How they hit or did not hit key needs to improve the team.

I will start with the NFC East. Near and dear to this avid Eagles fan.

Again, this is my take, so feel free to to put your $0.02 in. Of course, if you disagree...you would just be wrong

So, First team up in the review - The NY Giants, superbowl champs

Picks:
Round 1 - David Wilson Rb VT - Well, not who I would have expected for the Giants. Then again, we knew that Jacobs was gone. Add to that, Bradshaw has had issues with his feet and slightly injury prone. So it was a need. Not sure they grabbed the best back available, but if they plan to revisit thunder and lightning, and give Bradshaw some help, not a terrible pick either to move the chains.

Round 2- Rueben Randle Wr LSU - what a nice grab. First they knew Manningham was gone. Yes they have Nicks and Cruz....but wait....do they have Nicks??? This makes the pick even better, since Nicks could be somewhat hobbled for a while, and Cruz has had most success out of the slot. All this kid does is catch, and while he was never in a pass happy offense, I am not sure the Giants plan to be pass happy. Great grab for a need by Giants!

The rest was pretty much standard fare....Cb in round three, which could help, A sleeper at TE with Robinson out of Cincy. Then two OT's and a late DT pick. Hosley at Cb in the third could be a minor steal.

Not a bad draft, hit key needs in Rb, Wr and Cb, with some potential OL help in late rounds. Most "experts" grade it a B-C, I think that will greatly depend on how much Randle and Wilson are able to help early.

As a Giant hater.....I have to give props. Had D.Martin been there at Rb, I would be shaking in my boots.

Will be back tomorrow with Eagles.

That's very competent front office. I'll give them the benefit of a doubt as to whether Wilson was the right choice.

While Robinson is intriguing, their TE situation probably warranted an additional TE. Or maybe that just became glaring hindsight after Bennett decided to turn into a tackle.

 yeah, you got a point there.

Randle looks like a genius pick at this point. Everything out of Giants camp is that he has been amazing so far.

Yeah but when nicks is healthy he will be manningham which was inconsistent in that offense
Or, he will be Steve Smith who was VERY consistent. You assume Manningham was inconsistent due to the game plan, I think it was due to Manningham.

Next up, the Philadelphia Eagles.

This will sound Homerish, but I don't care. I don't think any team hit key needs as well as the Eagles did. With great talent. Add this solid draft to the key acquisitions they made with Ryans and I love this team now.

First round - Fletcher Cox DT - big strong fast disruptive DT, a guy who will jump the center and get in the Qb's face for inside pressure. AS much as all talked this was the target, Philly waited as long as possible to move up and nab him, and got a great deal to do it.

Second round - Mychal Kendricks Lb - Wow, they went and got Ryans from Houston, and then got one of the best ILBs in this draft with Kendricks. Filling a key, key need. Now they can bring Kendricks in on the weak side, and let Ryans roam the ILB slot. This defense just got really nasty in the middle.

Third round - Vinny Curry DE - this kid was projected at times as late 1st early 2nd round, and they got him in the third. They have been trying to find the answer on the other side of Cole, Babin has moments, but this gives key depth. Love the value pick.

Add to this key late round additions including - CB Brandon Boykin, Dennis Kelly OT Purdue, Brandon Washington at OG and Rb and Wr depth with Brown and McNutt respectively, and you have hit all key needs.

My ONLY concern is OT. With Peters out with achilles an then re-injuring the Achilles again on rehab, they have need at OT. Granted with Vick its the front side, not back side...but still, they need Kelly to hit. Dunlap and Bell are not great replacements in my mind.

Again, this sounds homerish...but I think Philly has filled all key needs with FA moves and draft. Except at S.

Back up qb/ future qb. How do you feel about Kafta as the future? How about Trent Edwards WHEN Vick goes down for 2-4 games this season?

I don't think Edwards makes the team. I do think Kafka is the back up this year, maybe next. I like the little I have seen in Kafka, but then again, Philly can make anyone look good, except former Texas Qbs. Foles may be the future, but we will see. This is the last year of Vick's contract, before the big cash hits. So Philly can cut bait if they wish. I doubt Foles or Kafka is the real future. Not sure what their plan is long term, only time will tell.
