Derrick Mason really gone?

Jamison Hensley of the Baltimore Sun reports in the most surprising move of the Ravens' offseason, wide receiver Derrick Mason has abruptly announced his retirement.

"I have had a tremendous career and I played for two great teams. I had fun," Mason told jocklife.com, a Web site that shares an office building with Mason's agent. "In my career, I have been able to do everything but win a Super Bowl. I've had the opportunity to play on great teams and with great players. After 12 years, I have seen it all and done it all," Mason said. "Right now, I am content with the decision I am making. All good things come to an end, and I am ready to see what else life has to offer."

"I have been thinking about this since the season ended," Mason said. "Emotionally I am just not that enthused. I have not been that enthused to get up and work out ... it was getting to that point. This decision has nothing to do with the contract situation; I have made enough money, more than enough money. Emotionally there are things that are more important. It's time right now. I don't know what's going to happen from here, but it's going to be really nice to see what life has in store for me. What I want people to remember about my NFL career is that I played hard ... played hard in practice and the game. I tried to make everyone better and would do anything to help."

What does this do to the Raven O?
Anyone available to replace him?
Clayton able to step up and become a #1?
Was the team aware of this possibility?
Is there more to his departure?

ESPN's John Clayton reports Baltimore Ravens WR Derrick Mason announced his retirement Monday on the Web site JOCKlife.com, saying he'd "seen it all and done it all." Mason was entering the final year of his contract and was scheduled to make $3 million. He had been trying to get a long-term deal from the team during the offseason, but a deal never materialized. His retirement is a big blow to the Ravens. WR Demetrius Williams now would have to move into the starting lineup with WR Mark Clayton. The Ravens have to replace the loss of an 80-catch, 1,037-yard receiver with Mason's retirement. The Ravens also lose a lot of leadership.

WOW! This had to be brought on by the death of McNair.

WOW! I'd say Harrison is a possibility. Still, this comes from so far out there it seems like a hoax

On a side note, this really kills Flaco's value now. They have some decent young receivers, but Mason made the passing game move. The loss of him is just terrible for a young Qb. Bet Baltimore REALLY wished they had chased harder for Boldin, Chad or Owens now.

Depending on how they move in FA this may be correct. Although Clayton has skills and may very well fill the role of #1 WR even if it is on a run first team.

Brandon Marshall rumors have been flying around here for a few awhile now. Not sure that Chad was ever an option and there is no chance that they were interested in Owens.

Harrison or Buress.

Im assuming once he gets moved to the reserve-retired list his salary doesnt count against the cap?

Boy had they known this in April, I wonder if Ozzie might have traded up to get Nicks/Harvin/Maclin

There will probably be a lot of water cooler conversations about this in Baltimore tomorrow.

I will miss Mason myself as he was a real gamer!

I know it might not help....but Matt Jones is out there, and thats a big target with good hands to pair with one of the speed guys. He can block in the running game and it might by them a year on the cheap.

Man, I agree Norm, I always loved the way he played the game. Played hard, did his job, and was a great leader. RC touched on it earlier, and I think I agree. I hate the timing of his for Mason, I think he's making it with a mind full of grief. McNair was a teammate and close friend. Mason spoke at his service. This is unfortunate and sad. I haope he hangs in there and enjoys the next chapter of his life.

I was high on Mark Clayton prior to this to step up this year, I am even more so now. The problem is, so will others and his value will rise quite a bit.

I do not like Dem Williams. Just way too inconsistent for me.

I always hear about Williams being ready to take that next step and he NEVER does it.

Just out of curiosity....anyone know what they have open this year in cap space?

Harrison/Jones could be a nice one year tandem.....
