NFL Impact

Heyward-Bey is a good prospect with decent size and great speed. He has done what Maclin and Harvin did, but in smaller doses and on a much smaller stage playing for Maryland. Do not let the numbers fool you. Had Heyward-Bey played at a top ten school, you'd know a heck of a lot more about him. With garbage at QB and no real supporting cast, Heyward-Bey did his damage as THE focus of the opposing defenses. I see him as a mid second rounder who will turn into next years DeSean Jackson, minus the ignorant plays. What do you think of Darrius? Discuss.

Bey just made himself a boatload of money. Watched him play a number of times this year, and he's definitely no Troy Williamson. He's the real deal. I like him better personally than Maclin.

I'm echoing John's thoughts on him as Deshaun Jackson plus a few inches. Depending on where he goes he could have a great rookie campaign. The only knock on him is consistency.....which oddly enough was the same knock on Jackson in addition to attitude problems.

And I honestly wouldnt worry about the consistency. Hard to be consistent when your the only man on the field.

This cat is the real deal. He is a tracl guy who converted really well, Maryland never used him properly.

They did the same thing with Vernon Davis as well, used him as a decoy to open up other people. They did not have enough confidence in their QB's to thread balls to him in double coverage or against more capable DB's, so they would run him around to open up opportunities for other players.

Given two years in the NFL and some time with a quality QB he could certainly emerge as a substantial talent for a few years.

My main concern would be his ability to absorb NFL level punishment, he never had to take much damage in college because people simply could not match him well and he was able to avoid big hits from the college level talent.

Being a former track guy he will have to play at a weight that allows him to maintain his true weapon...speed....without added bulk I cringe at him taking big hits from players like Ed Reed et al.

I definitely got a bit over-hyped on Bey. I'd still take Hakeem Nicks or Brian Robiskie ahead of him. He's an intriguing prospect, but I doubt he's anywhere as good as DeSean Jackson.

I actually have them at

Michael Crabtree
Jeremy Maclin
Darrius Heyward-Bey
Hakeem Nicks
Kenny Brit
Ramses Barden

ya, no way Barden goes ahead of Robiskie. And Heyward-Bey is a project. Nicks and Robiskie are way more developed.

Hey-Bey is a huge project. I don't understand why everyone has this guy so high. He runs really fast and has good size, but he seemed to drop a lot of easy easy catches and doesn't know how to run many routes. The speed and size arn't enough to be a WR. I'd rather have a guy that makes the catch and runs great routes, who might be slower or slightly shorter. Why are people so caught up on this guy? He looks like the biggest bust out there to me, because he can't run routes and lacks reliable hands. He looks like a combine/workout warrier with all the raw measurables, but none of the intangibles.

I guess you could say this about almost any rookie prospect, but all the weaknesses I've seen posted here and in other outlets are correctable with good coaching. However, you can't coach 6'2" or sub-4.4 speed.

I'm not saying he's the second coming of Jerry Rice, but if he had Chase Daniel or Graham Harrell throwing him the ball in those systems for 3 years, I'm pretty sure he would have garnered some Heisman votes along the way and put up some video game numbers.
I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt that with a legitimate QB getting him the ball, he can develop into a 1,000 yard guy on a consistent basis.

I just think Hey-Bey has Troy Williamson written all over him. Keeps rising up the boards just like Williamson because he has speed and everyone totally ignoring the fact that he doesn't have solid hands because he's not a natural WR. Both converted track guys, 6'2", obviously fast, they are within 5-10 pounds, limited route knowledge, and unsure hands. Just looking at the information available, it looks really similar for me.

Can anyone point out a couple track stars that were converted into WR's that became a relavent WR#1 or WR#2? I guess rocket ishmael was good a couple years, but anyone who actually had a career being a WR#1 or WR#2?

I'm totally not sold on Hey-Bey. I'm trying to like him, but I'm having a hard time doing so.

Where do you get he has limited route knowledge? His route knowledge is more complete than either Crabtree or Maclin because he came up in a pro system. Yeah, it wasn't well executed, but it certainly wasn't the Air Raid.

That's true. I meant to say that they were both poor route runners. I'd rather have to teach a guy how to run more routes, then fix every route. Route running is in the nuances to be successful and is tough for track guys to change years of training to run football routes. Can anyone think of a track guy turned WR that was good since Bob Hayes? The game is much more refined then 30 years ago, but I'll give him credit.

Rumor floating out there that the Giants love this kid and would like to move up to get him.
