If you need a refresher on the rules for the series or a run down of previous match-ups? Here is the rules and history thread:
"Close Calls 2009" - A Sports Outlaw Exclusive
Remember, this is based on re-draft leagues and non ppr scoring.

Today's Match-up:

Carson Palmer vs Jay Cutler

Last Year's Stats:
Carson Palmer - 4 gms - 731 pa yds - 3 TD's - 4 Int's - 38 ru yds - 0 TD's
Jay Cutler - 16 gms - 4,526 pa yds - 25 TD's - 18 Int's - 200 ru yds - 2 TD's

Today's Match-up is between two QB's who have a lot to prove this season. One was involved in one of the biggest offseason trades in recent memory. Can Cutler lived up to the hype in Chicago where many see him as the answer to all their problems? Will he have the same success in Chicago as he did in Denver, or will the lack of weapons in the passing game catch up to him? The other one was one of the biggest disapointments early last season, then he suffered a season ending season. Well Palmer's elbow is healed (or is it?), Housh is gone, Coles is in, and COC.....well he's still COC. Palmer still has weapons, but will his line be stable enough to give him time to take advantage of it? Can Palmer rebound this year or are we just going to have to get used to the fact that he's not going to be the elite QB that many felt he once was heading to being. These are just some of the questions you will need to answer in today's close call.

Palmer all the way here. He has superior talent at all 4 WR spots, what likely will be a better TE, and his defense sucks, so the offense will have to throw.

I went Carson for the same reasons Sgt did. I think he has better WRs and they just got a stud TE in the draft. Their RB was a #3 overall who is finally playing like it.

Cutler's on a new team, with a WR core that's not a solid. Love Forte and I would give Chicago the edge on O-line, but I'd have to say Palmer.

Cutler
1. New team/dynamics/relationships
2. WRs have not established themselves yet
3. D beginning to decline (not getting him back on the field as fast?)

Palmer
1. TJ's gone but the core is still there
2. Even if Chad doesn't return to form the team has several unproven options at WR that I like more than Chi's depth
3. D isn't going to be getting him back on the field any faster than Chi so this is not a factor.

I went with Palmer as well. If Chad keeps his mouth shut and plays like he did a couple years ago I look for Palmer to have a good season.

I will take Cutler. Much better running game, and still a much better defense. Who can tell how average their Wr's are until they actually have a QB. How much better do you think the Bears recievers would have been perceived these past 4 to 5 years if they'd of had Palmer instead of Griese/Orton/and what's his name. I know that the mouth named Chad and Coles are better then Bennett and Hester, by a mile, but you are still dealing with a dude with a # for a last name and an older guy in his first season here. Cutler has thrown to Bennett in college when both had their best seasons, and Cutler has an TE who can fly , causing many matchup problems. Hester's speed has to be respected, and Forte's presence in the backfield keeps all backers honest. I realize this is Cutlers first year in his system too, but I feel he has many pieces in place to afford him time to place the ball. I also feel that Cincy would be better with Cutler, and that put him over the top for me. 10......9.....8.....7.....6....5....4 :trampolin

Cinncinati actually did have the 12th ranked defense in the league last year.

They are also one of the only teams that had to settle for a tie (against Philly). Did you know that back in the day Palmer and Mr. "I'm going to make my own tacky yellow jacket" actually attended a Colts game to watch Manning and Harrison's chemistry on the field and on the sidelines? Lot of good that did them last year. With Quinn on Palmer's heals and the O weapons previously mentioned I'm in Palmer's den.

Despite all the earlier chatter about Forte, I don't see Cutler walking in and owning his offense this season. I could be wrong, but until then I'm sticking with Palmer. He was a good player on my roster in 2007 so admittedly I'm a bit biased.

Wow, I didn't even realize an NFL game could end in a tie. LOL

I can't gloss over the fact that Palmer's a couple seasons removed from being a top-5 fantasy QB, and coming off a season where he missed 12 games with an arm injury. Not to mention no more Housh (Sorry, not a huge Coles fan), Chad's no longer reliable for a 1,000 yd season, and Chris Henry's one speeding ticket away from being permanently banned from NFL stadiums.

Cutler's the choice, for '09 and beyond. He doesn't have to deal with the Baltimore and Pittsburgh defenses twice/year, either.

This is true, but he does have to deal with Minny twice a year and GB has a pretty good D as well that he deals with twice a year as well.

I went with Cutler myself in what I consider a very close call. Cutler will have a slight down tick from being the #3 fantasy QB last year. Palmer I expect to be in rebound mode and has great potential this year.

I'm back :)
i have to go with palmer, especially for the ADP value. maybe i'm just sentimental about the 2006 season when he broke out on my 2QB roster...

Minnesota makes their hay on run D. Their secondary's been pretty porous over the past several years. GB's is respectable but Woodson's getting a bit long in the tooth.
