Clifton Smith.... walks the plank

RZR

Sun-kissed & restless
The Bucs front office hardly took a break after finalizing their 53-man roster. They quickly got to work on the post-cuts waiver wire. Instead of confirming rumors that Clifton Smith would be traded away, the made him walk the plank along with T Derek Hardeman. Both were cut to make room for 2 waiver claims: C/G Ted Larson and RB Kregg Lumpkin

Bucs Claim Larsen, Lumpkin

I for one, am sad to see Clifton leave :sadbanana:

Bucs signed WR Dezmon Briscoe to their practice squad. Analysis: Tampa pried Briscoe away from signing for the Bengals' practice squad by offering him the rookie minimum ($310,000) rather than the practice squad minimum (about $100,000)

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers began to assemble their 2010 practice squad on Sunday evening, signing tight end Ryan Purvis, defensive end George Johnson and safety Vince Anderson. All three players were on the Bucs' 2010 training camp roster, and Purvis spent most of the 2009 season on Tampa Bay's practice squad.

Purvis ended the 2010 preseason tied with rookie wide receiver Mike Williams for the team lead in receptions. The former Boston College star finished with seven catches for 93 yards, including a 21-yarder against Houston on Thursday.

Yes, yes he did <3. He will be missed by the fans....and a few fantasy owners.

so who will be the ret guy in Tampa?

I know Cincy wanted to get Briz back on the PS, good talent, just no room 4 him

Tampa Bay had a surpius of qualified return men on the roster with Micheal Spurlock, who returned Tampa Bay's first kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown in 2007 and returned a punt 71 yards for a touchdown in 2009, Sammie Stroughter, who returned a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown last year, in addition to running back Kareem Huggins and rookie Preston Parker.

I don't see them picking just one guy. I think they'll merry-go-round this job for at least the first 4 games before settling on a favorite.

Personally, I'm hoping Preston Parker takes the edge because it would be a great platform for him to develop but I'd bet that Huggins and Stroughter get most the action right out of the gate.

Do you guys see something I missed with Briscoe? I was glad to have him when I drafted the guy but he really fell on his face it seemed like. I kinda figured TO would end up in Cincy, so I was thinking he would make it as the 5th WR. Boy was I wrong.

From reports I had heard out of Bengals camp he didn't have a bad camp at all. They really were hoping to sneak him onto their practice squad, but it came down to a number's game at a very deep position for the Bengals. It came down to 4 guys for 2 spots:
Jerome Simpon - 2nd rd pick a couple yrs ago
Quan Cosby - UFA last year that did a great job on punts last year and does the little things well.
Dez Briscoe - Coming along, but was still a little raw.
Matt Jones - wildcard

Only had spots for 2 of them. Simpson showed enough this year to get another chance. The talent is there, just needs to bring his NFL skill level to the point where his raw talent matches it. Cosby is just one of those guys who will run through a brick wall for you and in the end that won out over Briscoe.

The only thing that worries me about this move for Dez is that Morris decided to keep 7 WRs on the roster this season. I have to wonder how much room there is to develop on a squad/team where there are already to many mouths to feed during practice.

Tampa Bay's WR:
Maurice Stovall
Michael Spurlock
Sammie Stroughter
Mike Williams (R)
Reggie Brown
Arrelious Benn (R)
Preston Parker

Scratch Reggie Brown off this list..... Morris has more faith in his two new Rookies and his returning cast then he does in the 7th year outcast from Philly.

Sorry Reggie, I was hoping you could make it work.
