Character Red Flags

I preach (probably too much) about avoiding off-field issues when scouting draft prospects or looking at free agents.

With that said, here's 3 guys who will likely get first round money that I wouldn't even have on my draft board.

Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee - Finally turned on his effort when he realized he was a prospect, and has a misdemeanor assault charge.

Percy Harvin, WR, Florida - Some teams were already put off due to diva-like attitude. Not overly coachable, suspended in high school for an on-field episode, and now he was too stupid to get off the chronic before a scheduled drug test.

Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois - Another diva (what is it with WR's and DB's anyway?) Another coach's nightmare who actually was benched/suspended. Also has an "on/off switch" when it comes to his motor.

There is little argument about the talent level and potential of these 3 dudes. They may very well all turn over a new leaf once they enter the league. I just wouldn't be the G.M. that gambles on that possibility.

Anyone else have players in mind that would be off your board?

As a general rule I look for multiple incidents (or 1 that is to serious to overlook).

This is something I do not generally specifically look into operating under the perception that if it is an ongoing concern that it would present itself without looking further.

I have tended to overlook Ayers as he has climbed in the rankings more since the end of the season and is really ranked higher now than I would likely select him at as a result.

I do not consider the diva attitude as an off-field issue. Would need more info about Harvin and Davis before I would cross them off my board.

I dont worry much about the Diva attitude either. Trust me, Ray Lewis or the designated keep it strong man for the team will take care of that shiz REAL quick. You gonna mind when you are a rookie.

What I look for are consistent police run ins, authority issues, the kind of people the prospect associated with. To me the frame work supporting the athlete is just as, if not more important than the athlete himself.

Adversity will come, and when it does, what kind of support system does he have to fall back on? A strong family like Aaron Curry........or hookers and coke like PacMan?

Yaa, what he said. That was basically what I was trying to say.

I agree somewhat Sarge. The problem is, the teams that consistently draft these type of prospects believe that they are So smart that they can somehow fix what's been broken for a long time.
The reality is, you start shoving money and fame in the pockets of someone with little or no morality, bad, bad things start happening and you're stuck with a roster full of 4-game suspensions.

Vikings end up with Harvin and Loadholt on day 1. Guess they don't remember the "Love Boat" fiasco.
