Draft Projection - Top 10 Pick

NFL Impact - Cam Newton is a guy who could just as easily be a good QB as he could be the next Ryan Leaf. The physical tools are amazing, as is the size and speed. (Then again so was JaMarcus Russell). Newton has a confidence bordering on cocky (So did Ryan Leaf). The point Im making is there is no doubt whatsoever this guy has the body and tools to be a great NFL QB, but the brains and maturity are damn sure in question. Newton to me is the hottest girl at the dance who has a laugh that could break glass and can barely put together a sober coherant sentence. Sure, you look DAMN good with her, but after the ogling wears off a few months later, it dawns in your right mind you cant be in the same room with the woman. Then you remember you proposed to her in a fit of insanity. For one NFL team, they'll have to agree to marriage before ever seeing him at the big dance. I made the comment on the boards here that Id like to see the Cowboys trade Romo to the Bills to move up to 3 overall and get Newton, and then I realized putting Newton in Dallas with that night life, one might as well just hand him the hookers and blow day one. My opinion of his NFL Impact? Though he has the tools to tear this league a new one for the next 5-7 seasons, I dont think the brain will let it happen, and someone is going to pay a bunch of money to a guy who is going to be a marginal starter with an occasional brillant game.

Coming at you
I don't watch much College football, so my opinion of Newton comes from what I read and what I saw at the combine. The combine would be enough to scare me off of drafting him in the top 10. 11-21 with no defense on the field scares the hell out of me. I heard all the excuses about how he hadn't worked with the receivers and the timing was off. But still, 11-21?

Barring a trade, I think he ends up with Minnesota, which I think would be a good situation for him. Established running game to take some of the pressure off and a good receiving corp assuming Rice is healthy.

If someone has to take him in the first round, Minnesota would be the best situation. That said, I dont think the Rat could pass on him if he were still there at 10. From a fantasy perspective, if the Rat got him Id drop Newton off my rookie board completely.

This to me is Tim Tebow Part Duex, only difference is I think eventually Cam will make a good Qb.

I think someone will reach for him, I also think it will be in the top 10. Which is bad, since he is NOT ready to start in the NFL yet. To me the best fit would be Buffalo. He could sit a year behind Fitz and have a great QB coach like Gailey to teach him the game.

If he ends up in Arizona or Washington or Minny, with no support, he will be the next Qb bust.

IMO is way over rated, the press is hyping his talent up, he may go in the first round but will be a project with minimal results.

The Charlotte Observer's Darin Gantt predicts that Auburn QB Cam Newton will be the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.
"I think they were so set on Andrew Luck coming out, they're not going to wait," explains Gantt. "They need a quarterback." Gantt is the most clued-in Panthers beat writer in the country, so it would be difficult to not trust him. He also believes coach Ron Rivera "is going (to Auburn's Pro Day) for a reason," and that's to meet with the Panthers' next franchise quarterback.

From Rotoworld:

Cam Newton connected on 50-of-60 throws in passing drills at Auburn's pro day Tuesday.
Newton was still missing high on occasion, but the performance was a significant improvement on his Combine showing. For comparison's sake, Rotoworld's Evan Silva notes that Matt Ryan was 48-of-52 and Sam Bradford 49-of-50 at their pro days. After Tuesday's performance, NFL Network's Charley Casserly joined Sporting News' Russ Lande and ESPN's K.C. Joyner in opining that Newton should not be a first-round pick. Other analysts believe Newton has a legit shot to go No. 1 overall. There's not a more polarizing player in the draft.

Well I just moved him at 1 overall in the 2011 Mock here. When faced with the choice, there just isnt a clear cut guy. Id trade out of this pick.

IMO, he has to go #1 to Carolina. They have a new coach, new system, and he's done nothing but proven that he has the highest upside of any player in this draft. I really think that the Panthers would be nuts to pass on him.

I'm not saying that Cam WILL be a good NFL QB, I don't think you really have a choice unless you want to show the fans that your new system is going to be based on mediocrity.
