Bucs To Start Rookie Duo At WR?

It sounds like rookies Arrelious Benn and Mike Williams will start as a tandem. GM Mark Dominik admitted as much after the draft, noting that Williams was a first-round talent. Benn already appears to be the real deal and should be slotted in as the split end. Williams has looked great in camp so far and will join him as the flanker if he manages to stay out of trouble this summer. Sammie Stroughter will be an ideal fit in the slot role and round out a WR Corp that may be a bit of a surprise this year.

This could be great for Tampa. Have stud Wrs develop as their Qb of the future develops. The only issue is as rookies, they may not be totally ready for the heavy wear and tear of the pro league. A vet wr to help would be a great idea for Tampa. hmmmmmm Tampa...would not a Wr with T. and O. initials be a good fit??? ;)

Actually, if you look at recent history, aging diva receivers turn out well for us, take Keshawn Johnson, just a big a mouth as TO, perhaps just as talented. Johnson really matured in Tampa, stepped out of the limelight, and played some damned good football. If TO can make a similar transformation it would be a great fit.

sorry, with all the trouble Mike Williams has had, I think he needs a more stable vet than TO to help him along.

:biglaugh: Thats a great point

What kind of trouble has M.Williams been in, is he not worthy of being a starter ???

I don't know the stuff off the top of my head. It is in the category of being in trouble but not big stuff up to this point. I believe he may be on probation so one more incident could move him to the big trouble category fast. Trouble free he would have been a easy first rounder so at this point the Bucs got a great WR on the cheap if he keeps his nose clean for awhile.

I really don't think TO would be a good influence on the already troublesome Mike Williams, lol.

Mike was suspended in 2008 because of academics, and then in 2009, half way through the year (a year in which, if he'd a have finished, he would have been considered as perhaps the top overall WR drafted- he's that good) he quit the team because he was tired of losing.

After the draft, I don't think there's a question that the starting line up should be Arrelious Benn, Mike Williams, Michael Clayton, and Sammy Stroughter (you could even drop Clayton, I wouldn't mind). These are weapons drafted in order to grow with Josh Freeman. No lie... I expect .500 from the Bucs this year... With a run game as good as we have (when they actually run the ball) and now weapons for a talented Josh Freeman (I don't like him, but he is physically gifted...) like Kellen Winslow, Stroughter, Benn and Williams, and now a defense with a completely improved front four that should only help Rudd and the rest of the LB core... I'm excited.

Thanks, I knew you would know this off of the top of your head.

Norm is dead on, his talent level is of rd type. Kid can ball. But I think he ended up being suspended from syracuse football for the rest of the season this past year. I would have to look up his exact past, but it's no where near trouble free.

Great info RH, so he quit and was not suspended????? Ummmm that is just as if not more scary than being suspended.

I agree with Khris completely. I don't want TO anywhere near Tampa. I've been watching old game film of his 49'er days; he's been infected with himself for way too long to be a team player's role model for our rookies.

The day TO puts on a Bucs jersey is the day I heavily consider becoming a Tampa Breeze fan first. I'm adjusting to the Freeman Frontier and even getting excited about 2010's future! I'd be happier bringing Tebow here than TO, from a locker room perspective (and u know how much "love" Tebow).

I thought the concerns on Mike Williams Syr was that he was too much like Mike Williams of USC fame. Not any off field stuff, but that he wasn't a speed guy, and had issues with seperation and getting off the line.

The off field stuff is news to me.

Wow he quit because he was tired of losing, maybe making some serious cash will make him stick around .

If his number is not called for a particular play, is he going to quit running his route and take that play off ?? or worse if the Bucs are losing the game is he going to quit trying to go the extra mile and try to win the game. :hmmm:

or will he take his ball and go home after a 1-6 start???

Never heard a single comparison to the other Mike Williams. Speed is adequate and breakdown of him getting off the line and gaining separation are all positives. Also, he ran 4.49 at the combine, decent time.

Sounds like the reason he quit the team is he thought he was heading towards another suspension for what ever reason.

From NFL Draft Scout
This very talented receiver had a bumpy ride at Syracuse, missing 2008 due to academic suspension and then quitting the team halfway through the 2009 season in anticipation of being suspended again.
A highly touted prep prospect, Williams stepped in as a true freshman to post the best numbers (24 receptions for 461 yards and four TDs) of any first-year Orange wideout since 1983. A year later, despite inconsistent quarterback play, Williams was one of the best wide receivers in the Big East, ranking ahead of future first-day NFL draft picks Kenny Britt and Harry Douglas with 10 touchdowns among his 60 receptions for 837 yards.
Before his junior year, however, Williams was accused of cheating. He spent a semester as a junior college and was re-enrolled at Syracuse last fall. After serving a one-game suspension for violating team rules early in the year, Williams led the team with 49 receptions, 746 yards and six touchdowns in seven starts before leaving the team for undisclosed reasons.
There's no doubting Williams' combination of size, strength and speed. But NFL scouts have serious concerns about his character and maturity. It seems unlikely he'll be a top 50 pick because of those concerns, but a team could get a good find in the second or third round if he decides he's ready to contribute.
Here is a break down of his skills from the same source:
Release: Shows good initial quickness out of his stance. Owns active hands and an effective wiggle at the line to minimize the effectiveness of the jam. Has the straight-line speed to challenge deep, even beating fast corners in press-bail. Shows good body control to change direction as a route-runner despite his long frame.

Hands: Secure hands to catch the ball in traffic. Protects the ball against his chest and can take the big hit over the middle and hang on to the ball. Good extension outside of his frame and body control to adjust to the poorly thrown ball. Times his leap well and catches the ball at its highest point. Good fade target in the red zone. Battles for the ball with good flexibility and the hand-eye coordination to track passes over either shoulder.

Route running: Good straight-line speed to challenge deep. Smooth acceleration and can throttle down, sink his hips and create separation out of his cuts with an explosive first step. Precise cut for the slant and square-in. Can stick his foot in the ground and leave the defensive back scrambling. Presents a large target for the quarterback.

After the catch: Big-play threat after the catch. Has some lateral agility to elude defenders, although he's not elite in this category. Used on quick screens despite his size. Strong runner who fights through arm tackles. Good acceleration after the catch and can pull away. Good vision to set up blocks.

Blocking: Marginal effort to block downfield, despite good size and athletic ability. Flashes physicality, but lacks consistency in this area.

Intangibles: Was suspended for the 2008 season amid allegations of academic misdeeds during the spring semester. Took classes at Springfield (Mass.) Technical Community College and had to earn back his scholarship at Syracuse. Was able to do so despite those who had suggested he'd transfer to a lower level to avoid the suspension or opt for the NFL's Supplemental Draft.
Sounds like he has all the physical tools and separation is not a concern, but maturity and the mental aspect of the game could be his issue.
