Bills start talks with WR Steve Johnson.

The Bills are talking to wide receiver Stevie Johnson about a new contract, according to the Buffalo News.

Johnson averages 1,038 receiving yards and eight touchdowns over the last two seasons, and it sounds like the Bills can reach a new deal with their 25-year-old star receiver without the use of the franchise tag.

It would be nice to see this resolved early, if possible.

Uh Oh.

A person familiar with contract talks between the Bills and Johnson has told the Associated Press that the two sides remain "far apart," and adds that the receiver doesn't expect the team to use its franchise tag to retain him.
The fact that the sides are talking is probably a good thing, so we won't be too alarmed until/if Johnson officially hits free agency. The sides plan on speaking further this week at the NFL Combine. One thing to take from the story is that it might be a long shot for the Bills to use a franchise tag on Johnson, as that would come at a pretty steep price for one year and the team has other areas it needs to use some money after yet another disappointing season.

The Buffalo Bills made progress in their bid to re-sign Stevie Johnson before the receiver is eligible to become a free agent next month. Johnson’s agent, C.J. LaBoy, said he was “very optimistic” after describing talks as being “productive,” in an e-mail to The Associated Press on Friday. LaBoy wouldn’t go into further details in assessing the meeting he had with Bills officials at the NFL combine in Indianapolis earlier in the day.

I'd like to see the Bills keep the kid and stevie but not trash the farm.

Rekindle that core magic they had in the early 90's.

Playing in Buffalo doesn't have to be punishment.

I don't know why they paid so much for that qb.

Buffalo needs this kid....it would be a shame to see them lose him. I hope they can come to a deal.
