Bills Running Attack

Lynch, Jackson and now Spiller.
Do we see a trade within the next day or so? Seems likely, three incredibly talented guys, not enough touches to go around, even with the run heavy Bills.

Terrible draft pick by Buffalo. Now IMO you must deal Lynch for whatever you ca get.

I think so too, CJ Spiller is much too good, and will have too high of a price tag, to take on a role similar to Tashard Choice in Dallas.

I am not totally shocked by the pick. They have stated time and time again they wanted a change of pace, scat back type Rb. I just think they paid too high a price to take Spiller when they had more desperate needs.

Now, if they still get OT Brown from USC this round...then it won't hurt near as much. IF they waste a pick on Clausen though....it will be another short coaching career for Gailey.

rotoworld,

According to ESPN's John Clayton, the Bills' current plan is to give C.J. Spiller around 12 carries per game.

Fred Jackson will be so difficult to take off the field on early downs that this may even be an optimistic projection for the No. 9 overall pick. Spiller should wind up with 15-18 overall touches per week, including catches and return chances. He's just not going to be a workhorse in Buffalo.

(nfl.com)The Buffalo News reports Bills RB Fred Jackson said he was in "total shock," when the team drafted RB C.J. Spiller, but he plans to work well with the rookie and Marshawn Lynch. Last year, Jackson rushed for 1,062 yards and had 46 receptions for 371 yards. In his 11 starts, he averaged 112 yards from scrimmage and 4.8 yards a carry. He outplayed Lynch and proved himself, but now he has to do it again. "I look at myself as the underdog who still has that target on his back," Jackson said. "I want to go out and showcase myself and show I am the type of guy you can depend on." But Jackson also knows it's hard to get in a rhythm with three guys sharing the ball. "The better a running back is, the more touches he gets," Jackson said. "You could definitely see it being hard to get into that groove, the rhythm that running backs need. At the same time, you've got to take advantage of the ones you do get."

Analysis: We see Jackson continuing to be a key cog in the Bills backfield even in a shared role with Spiller and Lynch. Jackson will likely be used in most running-down situations with Lynch as the backup option. Spiller will also get carries and be used in passing situations.

latest reports i have seen in Buffalo is that Spiller will get 10-12 touches and be the "felix Jones" of buffalo. Lynch has yet to show at any team activities and there is a great deal of belief he will be gone before season starts either by trade or release. Jackson will be the main ball carrier

I look forward to seeing what Fast Freddie will do this year but Spiller being there knocks Freddie down on my list. I am a fan of Freddie!

I'm also waiting for Fred to take it. If Lynch is dealt before the season starts, then that would make me a little less worried about the running situation.

rotoworld,
C.J. Spiller picked up some offensive reps lined up out wide in Wednesday practice.

Spring practices are the time for experimentation, but Spiller is still expected to see plenty of time outside of the backfield. Keep an eye on his work in practices this summer to see if he's playing a role similar to Reggie Bush as a hybrid back.

cbssports.com,
As we expected when the Bills drafted him in April, C.J. Spiller will be used as a receiver and as a running back, according to the official team website. Head coach Chan Gailey said as much this offseason, citing that as a big reason why they drafted him. "We can split him out and try to create a mismatch out wide," Gailey said. " ... It just creates a lot of matchup problems in our opinion with defenses. I know in talking to George Edwards, our defensive coordinator, he said every time you have a guy like that you better know where he is on the field, you better know what his assignment is and what he does from that spot. So we feel we have a chance to create some very good matchups in our favor with a guy like C.J."

Analysis: We have a feeling that the Bills will utilize Spiller just like the Saints use Reggie Bush. After all, the two are the only players in college football history with 3,000 rushing yards, 1,500 kickoff-return yards, 1,000 receiving yards, and 500 punt-return yards. We think Spiller could touch the ball as many as 12 times per game, but the team has a sturdy rusher in Fred Jackson and even a high-quality reserve in Marshawn Lynch to snare playing time from Spiller. So while he might be an electric player, he just won't see enough work from week to week to be a strong Fantasy option. We consider Spiller a No. 3 Fantasy RB who might get picked earlier than he should be just because of what he did in college and on highlight reels. We wouldn't touch him until at least Round 6, and we've seen slip long past that in mock drafts already this summer.
