The San Diego Chargers have agreed to a five-year contract extension with TE Antonio Gates, reports ESPN's Chris Mortensen. Gates' contract is worth $7.235 million each season and includes $20.4 million in guarantees.

How does Vincent Jackson feel right now? Giving 20 million guaranteed dollars to a 30-year old with foot issues must seem like a slap in the face to Jackson. We appreciate A.J. Smith's commitment to Gates, but the reality is that there is a real chance Gates gets cut at some point during this contract because it's just not fiscally viable if he starts to decline before the end of it.
