DET - Jahvid Best expected to be feature running back
Source: Tom Kowalski - Mlive.com
According to Tom Kowalski, of Mlive.com, Detroit Lions rookie RB Jahvid Best is expected to be the team's feature running back this upcoming season. To start the season, Best likely will share carries with RB Maurice Morris. When RB Kevin Smith (knee) returns 100 percent from a knee injury, he's expected to split time with Best. In both cases, Best likely will get the bulk of the workload. 'If you look around the league, some of the best running teams always have a tandem,'' Best said. 'I'm sure I do, but most of the time it's a two-back tandem. It's a hard job for one man.''

Best is one of our favorite rookie running backs this year. He's explosive in the open field, yet a willing runner inside despite not being the biggest back. Best reminds us of a young Brian Westbrook, and could have a big impact for the Lions this year. He's also a great receiver out of the backfield, and thus could be a rare full time back. Veteran Maurice Morris is likely to spell him during the game.

My guess is this will be a one, two punch once Smith returns. Use Smith for short yardage and pound the way type running, but Best will get the most carries. I am absolutely flabergasted at some really good moves made by Detroit. Their offense could really be solid this year if Stafford is healthy.

:koolaid:

Detroit's looking good!

Are people concerned with his durability? I don't give much credit to the "injury prone" label but I was curious what others think.

I know I will probably get railed for this but I think Detroit made a mistake in taking Suh rather than taking 1 of those stud O-linemen. Or better yet trading out of the 2 spot and getting 1 of those linemen later on. Not saying I don't think Suh will be a stud but they need to protect Stafford.

I do question his durability but not because he's injury prone. I question it because he's 5'2" and a 120 lbs. I like Tate in Houston much better.

Chris Johnson
5'11" 200lbs

Jahvid Best
5'10" 199lbs

Best's body frame just looks frail to me. He does not look like a guy who can stand up to 20-25 carries.
I was very high on Johnson coming out of college with the success of a few smaller type backs like westbrook, and Tiki. I had him compared to Westbrook but a better runner and that has played out. I can't compare Best to Johnson but i think he has similar skill sets to these smaller backs who have made in roads to more impact in the NFL.

I can't remember. Didn't you have big reservations on Johnson too?

Not due to size, and I wasn't anti Johnson as much as I just didn't jump all over him.

I agree with you that smaller, shiftier backs can excel in today's NFL. And I'm not hating on Best, I think he is extremely similar to sproles.

But despite similiar ht and wt, I don't think he is built like Johnson. Johnson's game is speed, but he has power in his running style and he hits with authority. Best does not, he dances and does not seem to have that pop that johnson proved to have.

And Best does have an injury history, him holding up should be a real concern.
