Bengals WR Situation

Coach Marvin Lewis singled out Jerome Simpson as a guy the Bengals need to develop this offseason. Analysis: "We have to get Jerome Simpson ready," Lewis said. "We have to do a great job of using his skill and athleticism that can help us consistently." Lewis said that he hopes the light comes on for Simpson in his third year.

Somebody please step up is the situation. Lewis just said some nice things about Lav Coles also and yet he didn't appear to be the real answer to the WR situation. This whole division except the Steelers could use a talent injection at WR.

lol, no shit!

Bengals need some of their guys to step up. They still have some talent there, but someone needs to step up.

First off, Coles was a mistake. I just don't see where he really adds much of any thing.

You still have a legitimate #1 in Chad, but need to start building for when he is not there any longer.

Caldwell showed some flashes and looks to be someone who will be solid long term. I actually like him as a #2 or #3 in that offense. Just needs to show more consistency.

You then have 2 wild cards: Simpson and Matt Jones. If one of them can step up and make a difference, you have something. If not, this group is going to be pretty weak overall.

I look for them to draft a WR again in the 2nd or 3rd round.

Heard whispers from more than one outlet about the Bengals looking at Benn in round 1. If he shines at the Combine, those whispers might get louder.
Again, I'm biased, but I think Matt Jones is absolutely solid as a #2 in a balanced offense like what Cincy has become. How the year off affected him will be a question of course, but during his last year in Jax he put up nice numbers in a decidedly run-first offense with a gang of middling receivers and a league-average QB.

To me Caldwell is what they had hoped to do with the slot reciever for ever in Cincy. Have Chad and another deep threat on the outside and let Caldwell work the middle like Welker in NE land. Not sure if Jones is the answer per say...but will definately help in the red zone with his height.

rotoworld,

Jerome Simpson is drawing "rave reviews" from Carson Palmer and offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski this offseason.

"A ton more improvement from end of season to right now than the first couple years," said Palmer. "He has consistently made plays every OTA. If he can continue to do that, the sky is the limit for him." Simpson is working as the "X" receiver with Chad Ochocinco dallying in Hollywood. He may be battling Matt Jones for one roster spot.

(KFFL)Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski said the Bengals could use the no-huddle more often this season, reports Bengals.com's Geoff Hobson.

Chad Ochocinco revealed that he was recently injured while lifting weights, and couldn't perform for the season finale of Dancing with the Stars.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the injury "is not believed to be serious," citing Bengals sources. Ochocinco should be fine for June 15-17 minicamp.

rotoworld,
Despite his strongest spring to date, Jerome Simpson is still lacking consistency with his route running and hands.

Simpson is essentially battling Matt Jones for the fifth receiver spot. Jones cooled off after a hot start to spring practices, and he failed to show a consistent burst. The battle will continue through training camp, and Jones may have to decisively outplay Simpson. The Bengals have more invested in the former second-rounder.

  • -- Bengals No. 3 WR Competition - Andre Caldwell Fighting to Retain Job --
    Fri Jul 9, 2010 --from FFMastermind.com
  • PSX reports with all the talk about the Bengals’ additions of WR Antonio Bryant and WR Matt Jones, the drafting of WR Jordan Shipley and the progress of WR Jerome Simpson, WR Andre Caldwell has been generally an afterthought during Cincinnati’s offseason workouts. But during minicamp, Caldwell showed that he is not about to back down from the increased competition. In what is expected to be one of the fiercest battles of training camp, Caldwell and Shipley will vie for the third receiver spot. Over the five minicamp practices, Caldwell earned many rave reviews from coaches. He caught passes deep over the middle but also showed improvement on other routes. "There's going to be some real competition which I love," Caldwell said. "The best guy is going to win and but all of us are going to be in the rotation." Caldwell, as did the rest of the receivers, really struggled over the second half of last season. After having 29 catches and three touchdowns, two of which were game-winners against Pittsburgh and Baltimore, in the first eight games, Caldwell had just 22 catches and averaged 7.3 yards in the second half. In two of the final five regular-season games he was held without a catch. During the offseason Caldwell changed his conditioning and looks lighter and faster. Receivers coach Mike Sheppard also noted that the third-year player is playing fast on every play. If Simpson and Bryant can emerge as deep threats, Caldwell could re-emerge as a clutch receiver. He also figures to be in the hunt at kick returner despite two fumbles last season. Shipley continues to emerge as an inside threat. During the final two-hour session, the rookie third-round pick had four catches during a two-minute drill. Besides learning the playbook, Shipley has film of WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh and New England WR Wes Welker, who are two of the top inside receivers in the league. Shipley is also one of two rookies who have been seeing time on the first team offense, with first-round pick TE Jermaine Gresham being the other. Said Shipley of working with QB Carson Palmer: "It's been great. I've got a long ways to go as far as picking everything up but I'm excited about the progress so far."
