Bengals Hue Jackson hiring a smart move.

New Bengals assistant special teams/secondary coach Hue Jackson is viewed as insurance against losing offensive coordinator Jay Gruden to a head coaching job in 2013, according to Dan Pompei of the National Football Post. In a smart move, the Bengals have essentially installed Jackson as coordinator-in-waiting as well as a sounding board for coach Marvin Lewis. Gruden recently inked a three-year, $3.6 million extension, but there's concern that he could fly the coop next offseason after turning down serious interest from the Jaguars and Colts in January.

The Bengals had a great year much to surprise of many. Developing/ getting some good players they showed signs of a team on the rise. It also looks with this move that they are starting to view the NFL Chessboard several moves ahead now.

Cincy has quietly assembled a hell of a coaching staff. Lewis is a decent head coach, not a great one, but adequate. Zimmer is an outstanding DC IMO; Gruden is a rising star in coaching and great to have as OC and now with Hue back on the staff he provides doeth and insuracnce for next year.

Cincinnati is finally starting to do things right. Stock up on young talent and make their draft picks count. Stock up on more draft picks. Get rid of locker room cancers. Assemble a great coaching staff......now if they would just spend some of the cap room this year and bring in a difference maker or two they will be poised to set themselves up for a few years.

......now if they would just spend some of the cap room this year and bring in a difference maker or two they will be poised to set themselves up for a few years.

We went through the uncapped year and some teams like the Bucs ($61 million) chose to not spend money. This year with the new CBA their is a cap number/ ceiling and now there is also a floor......... teams will have to spend about 90% of their cap money every year.

Norm, I asked in another thread, but I am pretty sure the floor does not kick in until 2013. Are u sure that its this year? Thought I read this last year about the 2013.

I have looked around a bit and this is what I have found...... They didn't have to spend it last year and they don't have to spend it this year as well. But there is a real pressure to spend it now even though it is not required.

Some teams are going into this offseasons with tens of millions in room to spend, with last year's space rolling over to this year. And there's no minimum spending limit in 2012 either, so that could create even more money rolled over into 2013.

But from a cashflow standpoint, some of these clubs could be getting themselves into murky water if they don't open the wallet soon. In 2013, the 89-percent minimum kicks in, with the rolled-over money included. And in 2014, the new TV deals will threaten to send the cap to the moon. So for clubs like Jacksonville, Kansas City and Tampa, holding back now means needing to absolutely splurge later, something they may not be able to afford.

Even though the floor drops in 2013, you don't want to have your hand forced.

This should make for a strange year as teams that don't normally struggle with the cap are forced to be either the grasshopper or the ant.

Teams struggling with the cap won't feel the floor drop. Indeed the rich will only benefit from what will be uncharacteristic behavior from those teams with money issues.

In a way, it removes the cap.
