Bears WR Hester Loses KR Duties

CBSSports.com reports Chicago Bears WR Devin Hester said he is giving up his kickoff return duties so he can focus more on becoming a better wide receiver. He will still be the team's punt returner. This may impact his value in return yardage leagues but the increased recieveing numbers may offset that somewhat. Danieal Manning offers an explosive option now in the kickoff return department now for the Bears.

Sometimes people that do well as kick returners do not have the route running skills necessary to become good WRs. Hester is an outstanding returner and a great athlete. With enough practice, he should be able to master the art of route running. Cutler could have quite a target here.

IF Hester can learn the tricks of the trade it's great news for Cutler.

I can't really fault Chicago for that, he didn't score on returns all of last year, and wasn't nearly as dynamic as he was in the 2 years prior.

A name that jumps to mind for me is Karl Williams, while he was a great returner, he never flourished as a WR. I think Hester has better potential to make the transition than Williams did though.

I think if you are become a solid route runner, you will have this discipline and learning ability developed before you leave college. I don't expect Hester to make the transition into a long term productive NFL receiver.

Hester got a nice contract, and quickly lost his effectiveness as a returner, as many returners do once they are pushed into other roles on the field. I remember us having this discussion back when Hester got the money, and it was announced that he would be working as a receiver. Remember, Hester didn't want to play offense, he viewed himself as a defensive back.

Hester has his money, and is playing a position he didn't want to play. I wouldn't expect very positive results from this.

Well I'm going to have to disagree with some of you. I think that Devin Hester has huge upside if he can develop his routes just a little. Cutler can throw the deep ball and Hester is scary when it comes to that.

Other than Earl Bennett, Matt Forte, and Greg Olsen someone is going to have to get open and get looks. Why not Devin Hester? He's one of my favorite sleeper WRs this year.

This gives Cutler a speedy guy to throw to. Now they have a possibility to open up the field more and maybe give Cutler time to make good decisions on the field.

Its a nice deep threat and I think Chicago finally has the WRs to have the underneath guys working in concert with a speed reciever.

Speed means nothing if the receiver can't run routes, and don't have the physical strength to bust through a jam at the line of scrimmage.

I think the guys best value to a team is as the return guy, and as a 3rd or 4th receiver in the slot.

And when you drop as many as you catch.

I agree...bad move here...should leave him in return game instead.
