Are the Jets nutz? Tebow as a kick returner?

Assistant special teams coach Ben Kotwica admits the Jets are considering using Tim Tebow on kick returns.
"I think there might be some value there on kickoff returns," Kotwica said. "It’s something that we’ve talked about. I don’t think there’s any option with Tim that we’ve taken off the table."

Good runner, sure but kickoff returns, no way. He's too slow and I can't imagine why any team in the NFL would put their #2 and before the year's out possibly #1 QB on the field to return kicks. Ole Ben must be on some good stuff in the Big Apple.

That's smart, buy some guy and find out you really have no where to use him, and resort to tossing him around on special teams....

cant be any worse than he is @ QB

In my league last year out of 12 starts he failed to score 16 or more fantasy points only twice and averaged 17.9 ppg.

Jay Cutler, on the other hand, averaged 15.8 ppg in his starts last season by way of comparrison.

He'd probably do well in that position. He is fast enough, and smart enough to commit quickly to a north south running lane and follow the blocks.

I could see the injury concern if he was being sent out on special teams to block or return punts.

It gets a good player into the game plan, at least until he finds his way into the #1 qb spot where he will likely end up.

He'd be the slowest returner in the league.

The slowest returner is gonna be the guy who hesitates when he gets the ball, juggles the ball, and/or tries to get fancy with some east west running that results in lost yardage or a turnover

Okay, point taken, he'll be the slowest runner, running back kicks in the NFL IF the Jets were that stupid, which they aren't.

I think you have to look at this in a business sense.

First, while not spending a ton to get him, the Jets need to put folks in seats. You have the superbowl champs in the same market, and the Jets haven't been all that in a while. you have Sanchez who may or may not end up being a bust. So you have an Iconic player, and you can market that guy to the hilt.

As for risk, most were planning to draft him and convert him to Te or Rb, so why is this any more risk? Most teams use Rbs for returns, or Wrs. The kid is a bull with the ball, given decent blocking he could be very good here. Plus you market how you are using him for everything to sell seats.

Y'all remind me again, who was the last QB 2 that was used for kickoff returns? And for crying out loud many, if not most, predict he'll be the starter there before the year is out. FTR, I'm not one of those that expects that to happen. Who was the last starting QB used to return kicks? I'm not saying that it can't be done just that it's a dumb idea IMO.

to be clear, my comment above was with the understanding that Tebow is Tebow and not really a qb.
