The tremor is starting. The tingling sensation one gets when helmets and highlights start to appear on ESPN again. Preseason is here, mocks are in full swing and timers are set for your fantasy league draft.
Optimism, apprehension and impatience is upon us all.
Heck, in a week or two the Football Forum might actually start more new threads than Listener!
But have you noticed the trend toward gloom?
Giz has started banging the drum a little early but I'm right there with him. Along with optimism, apprehension and impatience, the preseason also brings INJURIES.
Not so bad right now, especially in redraft leagues, but as the next few weeks unfold, one of us...some of us...(many of us?) are going to lose a player we kept or drafted highly to injury.
Grrrrr.... A kick in the teeth before the season even starts. Optimism turns to despair, apprehension to "who gives a damn, and impatience becomes an eternal wait for next season.
Oh, it doesn't even have to be a season ender for your coveted player. A Jamaal Charles hamstring, A Drew Brees broken finger, or an A.J. Green high ankle sprain is all it takes to suck the wind out of your fantasy sails.
No... I know the good owners fight through adversity and that most leagues are won off the waiver wire blah, blah, blah but it's still a downer.
You spend these wonderful weeks prior to the draft scheming and strategizing only to have that plan flushed early and often rendering all your hard work meaningless.
Seriously, a league could have a mandatory "auto draft" and I don't think the outcome would change drastically. Fill your team with random players and start watching the wire. The guys that have the best access to the news and the time to read it will win.
But...there's always that chance that the fantasy Gods will smile on you and let your top players stay healthy all year
...then all you have to deal with is finding a reasonable excuse for not winning.
