Alex Smith Might Consider Calling Plays --

CBS Sports reports San Francisco 49ers QB Alex Smith said he might consider calling his own plays if coaches don't have the calls ready for him by the 24-second mark of the play clock. Another possibility is for Smith to have the game plan on his wristband, which would shorten the calls. Smith complained after Sunday's loss to the Seahawks that the coaches did not get plays into him at times.

ESPN's Mike Sando reports San Francisco 49ers HC Mike Singletary and QB Alex Smith sought to clear up what they considered to be misunderstandings regarding the team's inability to get plays into the huddle on time Sunday. Their version of events: Singletary misunderstood quarterbacks coach Mike Johnson when Johnson told him on the field that headset problems were to blame. Johnson had blamed headsets in one such case, but not for the others. That's why Smith and Singletary appeared at odds after the game, with Singletary blaming headsets and Smith saying headsets weren't the main problem. Singletary, in addressing reporters Monday, said the team does need to improve its efficiency in getting plays into the huddle. Singletary is considering moving OC Jimmy Raye onto the field from the pressbox during games, although no decision has been made along those lines. It's important for the head coach to make quick big-picture decisions, such as whether to go for it on fourth down. It's then important for the coordinator to pass along the play and personnel information to the sideline quickly enough for the relay man -- Johnson in this case -- to get the details to the quarterback. The confusion over the cause of the communication troubles contributed to the appearance of disarray surrounding the 49ers.

For a Coach with the persona of being so on top of things, Singletary is certainly spotlighted alot for just the opposite.
