Advice for 5th pick, PPR league

6 pts TD, 1 pt 10 yards, 1 ppr for WR
6 pts TD, 1 pt 10 yards, 1/2 ppr for RB
4 pts TD, 1 pt 25 yards QB
Start 1 QB, 2 RB, 2WR, 1 TE, 1 Flex (RB/WR), K, Def
I pick 5th out of 12.

In the league I draft in tomorrow, I was a new guy last year and ran a strategy of drafting two WR at the turn of the first/second round and did very well. This year there are several people that are going to run with the 2 WR picks for their first two because of this.

I'm a firm believer in STARTING runs and not finishing them. There are 3 RBs I would take if they were there first (Adrian, Forte, Jones-Drew) and possibly Turner. Those are my Tier 1 RBs. After that I think there are enough Tier 2 RBs that there should be one left for me. However, there are 3 Tier 1 WRs (Fitz, Moss, A. Johnson).

I assume 3 QBs go in the first 20 picks, leaving 17 picks, two of which are mine. I have a strong feeling that there will be 7 WRs taken between my two picks based off of starting a run and some people wanting to either make sure they get a WR or possibly even grab 2 because of my success. So 11 non-RBs go before my second pick at 20. Now getting what I would consider the number 1 WR and the number 7 to 9 RB. Seems like a no brainer to me, anyone have thoughts?

I like Andre Johnson over Fitz as the top WR in PPR leagues. If he's there at 5 I would have absolutely no problem with that pick. As you also stated, there are many options for you at that slot. I normally share your opinion of starting things in drafts and not reacting, but in the first round I'm completely cool with letting the first 4 owners make my 5th choice for me, so to speak.
Just hope ADP and Turner go before you pick. That leaves you the chance at MJD/Forte or AJ/Fitz. Can't make a wrong choice with any of those 4 guys in this format.

In a league like yours where QB's are de-valued (4 pts/TD) I'm loading up on RB/WR/TE before I even look at a QB unless someone really falls to a bargain spot. I'd probably have 2 RB's, 2 WR's and an elite TE before I look Qb in the 6th round.

What about Moss? You give up 20-25 pts a year in receptions, but if he gets 4 TDs more then you've made up for it. There's no reason, in my eyes, that Brady/Moss shouldn't do as good as they 'should have' done last year.

That's what I did last year and that's my feeling for this league. There are some really good people in this league, and a couple ... noobs ... so to speak.

Moss is a little less of a sure thing than Fitz or Johnson in my opinion, esp. in PPR.

Ideally you go WR/RB if Johnson, Fitz, or Moss are available so you're at the beginning of the WR run and can still get a great RB in the 2nd round since the WRs will take a lot of the picks between 1st and 2nd.

Hmmm, evidently someone thinks Brees will be doing something great as they picked him in the top 4. (Brees, Forte, ADP, Turner) So I was able to get MJD with the 5th pick. Now I'm actually nervous there will be a choice between a good Tier 2 RB and Tier 2 WR with the 20th pick (my next pick). If so, do I dare go RB for my number 2 pick? Or do I figure that between my 2nd pick and 3rd pick every one will get one WR at least (that's 4) and only one person is guarenteed to get another RB ... thus I go for the WR and then RB hoping that only 1 or 2 RBs go. I'm very much a student of trying to figure out what people will pick between your two picks in order to figure out what you should do.

MJD is very solid for PPR. Good work.

I would take a WR if I were you but really it depends on who is available. When guessing what everyone else is going to do, I would just assume that everyone will be going RB/WR or WR/RB and someone will grab Brady. Even if some go RB/RB or WR/WR it should balance out in the end.

Is there a chat here? some interesting things happening ... or not happening here.

(edit) Basically one more pick unti 20 (me) Brady still isn't gone and most have gone RB. Only Moss, Fitz, A. Johnson, and Calvin Johnson are gone.

I'm thinking Reggie Wayne or Brady .... still should be a decent WR available after 8 more people pick, and I might trigger one or two of these guys to pick a QB.

1 pt per 20 yards passing ... but only 4 pts per passing TD.

bob, I like to talk and discuss things :). I could pick either and be ok, but I like to try to figure out what the next 4 people will pick .... twice before my next pick. See all the info I put in there.

By the way, this site could use a good IRC / chat channel. The one on the front is 'basic'.

Get Forte if he is there. If not get A.J. or Moss... I would also get T. Brady on my second pick if he is there.
