rotoworld,

Citing two league sources, Comcast SportsNet Bay Area reports that the 49ers have opened talks about a long-term extension with Vernon Davis.

Davis is reportedly asking for $40 million over five years, including $25 million guaranteed. The $8M annual average is similar to what elite wide receivers make, but it's still a reasonable enough jump-off point for both sides to have productive negotiations. Look for a deal before the season.

It'll be interesting to see how much dough one great year gets this young man.

That is a lot for just 1 good year. I need to see another year before I would offer him any money.

What is his current contract?

So his contract is up at the end of the season then. Talk to him and get him motivated to work hard again this season in order to get a big contract. Maybe offer a 1 year extension with option to a bigger longer contract at the end of the season.
