49ers Draft

efactor

Coming at you
The offensive line is the obvious weakness of the team and with 2 1st rounders (13 and 17), I have started to rethink their approach (prompted by a poster on another site) for the first round. I really like Buloga and despite some mocks having him going in the top ten, I think he will still be on the board at 13. If not, Davis, Williams or Campbell will be. What about grabbing the top OT available at 13, and then take Iupati at 17 (assuming he's available)? This would do wonders for the weakest link of the team. Give Gore more room to run. Give Smith more time to pass. They are fine at the offensive skill positions. Smith is the question mark and they aren't going to draft a QB anyway.

Since this is such a deep draft for DBs, they can address that area in the 2-4 rounds. Their front 7 is very strong, so not much help needed there (everyone could use another edge rusher). They can focus on the secondary and hopefully one of them could also return kicks.

If Best is still on the board in the 2nd, I still think he would be the guy to grab, but I'm really liking a Buloga/Iupati combo in the 1st.

Thoughts? I know there aren't many 49er fans on the board but I respect all your opinions.............

I heart both those guys ALOT, so if that happens I will virtually punch you in the neck. LOL

1. sign Jermon Bushrod from the saints, sending our 2nd round pick

2. get OJ atogwe from the rams with a poison pill contract (ex. if he plays 5 games in regular season in missouri, entire contract is guaranteed) and move goldson to SS

3. Draft CJ Spiller and trade #17 pick down for more picks

4. ???

5. DYNASTY

I'm confused as to why everyone is so locked in to the Niners and Spiller.
They have Gore, used a decent pick on Coffee last year, and have enough holes to fill with those 2 awesome first rounders, that Spiller becomes a luxury pick. You don't build a stable franchise by drafting "best players available" when you're in the midst of a playoff drought.
I totally dig the theory of locking in 2 top O-lineman to go with Staley, then if you simply MUST have a RB, wait until the 2nd or 3rd round and still get a good one.

I don't get it either. I think Best will be there in the 2nd and he is as good as Spiller. Fix the OL...................

Spiller will be long gone early, the need for a backup RB for Gore is a must as he is often injured and misses significant playing time and with Glen Coffee in the line up did not fair so well.

RB's in this years draft are fairly deep so the Niners need to use the 1st rounders to fix other team needs

sounds like a plan . . . ;) . . . i used to have the 49ers in a GM league on the saintsreport board years ago . . . i really like the way this team is going . . . ;)

the reason we all want spiller is because he solves 2 issues of ours: the KR/PR and COP back. we can't just have gore powering it every play then when he needs a rest, we just use power glen coffee.

with spiller we will have the power in gore and the speed with spiller.

of course things may change based on free agency/draft. no one would have thought we would have taken crabtree at #10, but he was available, and there was no way we could pass him up.

and i really wish our FO would get jermon bushrod from the saints for the 2nd rounder. that would allow us to possibly not get an OT in the first and trade our #17 down for more picks

I like Spiller just fine, brt. And you're absolutely right, he would be a nice addition. But every other team picking ahead of you can say that too, but he just isn't practical when you have other more pressing needs that could be filled with an extremely high-caliber player at those spots.
Pass-rushing LB, or DE, maybe?

Granted I'm no SF expert, but is Gore really a power back? It seems to me that he's just a slightly bigger version of Spiller, anyway. In that he's a true 3-down back who has a little speed and a little strength and is very skilled at receiving out of the backfield.

And you can get the same thing with Best in the 2nd. If he's not there, it's not a pressing need for 2010. Gore is an excellent 3rd down back............

Fix the OL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

even as a cal fan, i don't know about jahvid best based off that concussion...

i would much rather see us trade our 2nd rounder to the saints for jermon bushrod, then take spiller at #13 and try to trade our #17 down to the end of the 1st/early 2nd and get some extra picks along the way

Well, I don't claim to be an expert on Bushrod, but I checked the Saints website and terms like "filled in nicely although he needed help" and "serviceable" were the most prevalent. Doesn't sound like someone I want to give up a mid 2nd pick for, but again, I am not expert on the kid. Sounds like he has potential, but so would someone taken in the top 50 players in this draft........

I really don't like the idea of trading down from 17. SF doesn't have that many holes to fill and I want to add impact players, especially on the OL. Guys who can step in and start now.

Anyway, good topic for thought.............

i would just rather get a good o-lineman like gaither with the #17 than take a chance on a rookie o-lineman, and if we could negotiate down to like a second rounder for him that would be even better

then all we have to do is get spiller at #13 and trade our #17 and next years #1 up to get eric berry and we're back in business!

I'd be almost willing to bet some vbucks they take a pass-rushing LB (Kindle?) and one of the 2nd-tier OT's with those 2 picks, and that would be an awesome haul.

Just curious as to why you're so hell-bent on wheeling and dealing good draft picks, brt? You're sitting about as good as you can possibly be in this particular draft to have a ton of great players available to fill your team's need areas and put a chokehold on the division. You'll also be in a position in the 2nd round to grab another player who in any other year would probably warrant a 1st round grade.
