Okay folks, you know the drill. Lets see who we as a consensus vote of the Sportsoutlaw experts think teams should take. The rules are simple, please choose one of the players listed and vote. Or, if you prefer, choose other, and then post who you would have taken. After 24hrs, the votes will be tallied and the winner will be awarded to that team. We will be going off the draft order now set...so if there are trades...we will see what happens.

Went with English here. At the bottom of the round best player sometimes rules over need. OL and CB is need, but I don't see them passing up a guy like English if there.

Wait until Wes gets here.

LOL This is gonna get funny

Ok, first off, thanks AD for apparently paying attention to every draft post I've made in the past month.

Secondly, how is Alex Mack, Max Unger, or Eric Wood not even an option here?

Thirdly, obviously the O-Line is the only "need" that the Steelers have at all at this spot in the draft. And whereas there are some O-linemen in the poll, they're probably not on the Steelers' draft board at all due to character issues or a soft attitude.

MAYBE Butler could be a realistic option due to a secondary need and his skillset, but they will not, I repeat NOT select a CB here when the aforementioned 3 linemen are still available. I like English as much as the next guy, but he's not really an option here, either when so many high-quality guys at better need positions are available.

Ok, after all that, I'm going with the player known as "other" with Alex Mack in mind. Although it could be 2 other guys besides what's listed. (Unger, Wood)

Ayers = Not on my personal board due to character issues
Duke = Not on my board because he's reportedly lazy and not a better Guard prospect than the guys I mentioned already (not to mention Andy Levitre who I love in round 2).
Beatty = Soft finesse guy that really isn't better than what I can get in subsequent rounds.
English = Really good player that I would like to have, but it represents a complete luxury pick when we have 4 other need spots that need addressed.
Butler = The most realistic choice here (If a gun was pointed at my head) but there are many other CB's they can get in later rounds who are as talented as him.

Rant is now officially over. LOL

I went Duke, in 10 years we may look back and say he was the most dominant OL to come out of this draft.

Or we could read about how he wants a contract extension and holds out/shuts it down after being a league-average guy over his first 4 years.

Honestly, his weaknesses so far outweigh his reward, I don't even have him on Pittsburgh's draft board.

You may be 110% correct in your assessment, I'm just not willing to gamble a first round pick to find out when there are so many other safer options.

i dont know about you guys, but personally i hope like anything that i am NOT looking to see who the best OL prospect was in this year's draft in 10 years. but maybe thats just me. :)

Because by most sites i have listed and have used for this, none of them are listed at first rounders. Again folks, this is why we have the other. I knew O-line was an issue. But coming off a superbowl, I really didn't think they had THAT bad an issue.dunno:

Thirdly, obviously the O-Line is the only "need" that the Steelers have at all at this spot in the draft. And whereas there are some O-linemen in the poll, they're probably not on the Steelers' draft board at all due to character issues or a soft attitude.
Mainly because from most I have read, Duke is considered a much better G prospect. I won't deny Mack and Wood and Unger are solid to future stud Centers...but I am not sure they are considered as the same caliber at Guard. I know Sarge is also high on Mack for this reason I believe. Mostly on this one, I took every player that has dropped that are first round talent (Ayers and English) and then the top names at positions needed (Robinson, and such).

Here is my only beef. Pittsburgh to me is HOW you run a franchise. You don't force a need pick, if a better player has dropped to you. Look at Mendenhall last year. I honestly don't see a team like Pittsburgh flinching if English was there. He is way too good to pass up, and as you state....the Oline depth and Cb depth in this draft allows them to address these issues later.

Ok, after all that, I'm going with the player known as "other" with Alex Mack in mind. Although it could be 2 other guys besides what's listed. (Unger, Wood)
Not a bad pick, can't argue with it.

Mendenhall was selected for 3 reasons:
1. He was right there with J.Stewart as the #2a/2b rated RB in the draft behind Run-DMC and fell a bit farther than most people thought.
2. RB wasn't the main need, but it required attention because Fast Willie is clearly not a full-time back anymore. (Mewelde Moore had to start 3 games last year)
3. He's a big back in the mold of the Bus to help regain the power running style Pittsburgh just didn't have with their stable of runners.

As for this first rounder, I do feel there is depth at many positions in this draft. However, the O-Line depth will dry up before their pick in the late 4th round whereas some other positions have hidden gems available all the way through the 6th. Our first member mock (4-rounder) went as good as I could possibly hope for where I got A.Mack (C), Andy Levitre (G), Sherrod Martin (CB/S), and DeAngelo Smith (CB) with the 4 picks. The only areas I couldn't get to at that point were D-Line depth and a developmental WR/return man. Those are 2 places where there is good players to be had late.
In the nutshell, I desperately hope they go O-Line with the first 2 picks, then start chipping away at the positional depth all through day 2.
